About Colin
- What kind of experience do you have?
The bulk of my professional life has been in the West End Theatre, in "Cats", 42nd Street and then for twenty five years as Assistant Musical Director and first keyboard at Les Miserables. After Les Miserables I was conductor and musical director for Don Giovanni the Opera, a new version of Mozart's work, which attracted some favourable reviews. "Colin Pettet’s little ensemble played beautifully" - Independent ."....the conductor, ……… achieves feats of coordination with the singers who may be anywhere on heaven’s dance floor." -Michael Tanner in The Spectator. As well as being a performer I have taught regularly throughout my career. I have taught piano privately and at Brunel University Arts Centre, and tutored for 'O' and 'A' level, and GCSE. I have taught in an independent prep school as supply teacher, and as temporary cover for a term as Director of Music. I still go in regularly to help out with the music. My duties in the West End included extensive coaching of the cast for their roles in the show, and I had particular responsibility for auditioning and coaching the children. I am currently a tutor on the Musical Theatre course at Chichester University.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
Organ with John Pryer in Birmingham. Harmony and counterpoint with Robert Sherlaw-Johnson, and history of music with Frederick SternFeld and Andrew Jones, all at Oxford. Piano with John Barstow at the R.C.M. and then privately in London with Philip Fowke.

At regular intervals throughout my career I have thought "I wish someone had taught me that". I will try to ensure that my pupils say it less frequently than I did.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical and jazz piano, and all aspects of musical theory, harmony, counterpoint and arranging, analysis and musical history. I also give coaching for musical theatre.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO), an Associate of the Royal College of Music (ARCM) in piano teaching; I have an MA in music with 2nd class honours from Oxford University where I was Organ Scholar at Worcester College. I then completed two years postgraduate piano study at the Royal College of Music studying with John Barstow.
- How much do you charge?
£25 per hour. £15 for 30 minutes. I would normally teach 10 lessons per term payable one term in advance. However, if after the first lesson you decide not to continue, there is no charge.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home or online. I am currently living in London but we will be moving to Tiverton in Devon, near Exeter in December/January. I therefore anticipate only teaching online, (theory and harmony etc) until January, but I am taking bookings now for piano lessons beginning in January. In exceptional cases I could travel to a student's home, but I would have to charge for the travel time, which may double the cost.
- When are you available?
Weekdays until early evening. Perhaps Saturday mornings if that is the only time possible. I would break for a week at half term.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Associated Board and Trinity instrumental exams, and all theory and academic music exams up to diploma and University entrance.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
This would be by email. I use Musescore music transcription, which I strongly recommend. It is very easy to use and free to download. I expect to be able to mark and give detailed comments on up to four pieces of work in an hour, depending obviously on length. I would want five hours fees in advance, but the student could work at their own pace, and submit work as frequently or infrequently as they wish.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
To the surprise of some of my colleagues I still love playing and listening to music, and have always felt studying something of real value, helps you learn to love it. I hope I can convey that to my pupils. If not it will be my failure not yours.
