About Sarah

I have 17 years teaching experience and am passionate about supporting students to reach their full potential. Whether you want to boost your grade for university or you need support with content and exam technique, I have the experience to help you achieve this. I have been an examiner for AQA for the past 3 years and believe this skill gives me the edge when supporting students through the examination process. Many students find they feel they know the content but this is not reflected in their mock grades and assessments, therefore I am able to unpick this with the students and remove any barriers preventing them from achieving their potential.

About the lesson

My tutoring approach:

1. My style is very much student led and therefore I will focus on whatever need the student either self highlights or something I have spotted in their technique. This can be anything from improving students understanding of A01 knowledge and description, A03 discussion and evaluation, exam technique or specialised essay writing strategies. I have taught all of the units for the AQA specification and therefore have a lot of experience and knowledge in delivering a range of content. I am happy to share exemplar materials with students and also mark work and give feedback in line with the marking guidance.

2. I am an Assistant head teacher, subject lead of Psychology and Sociology and have taught A level for 16 years. I have been an examiner for AQA and have had very positive feedback from my supervisor on the quality of my marking. I have also taught the Edexcel (International and domestic specifications), Cambridge International, Eduqas and OCR specification too. I have also tutored students for the Extended Project Qualification and can advise on how to complete this too.

3. I’ve been tutoring for 5 years and have worked with students with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia who are both currently in school and those being home educated. I have experience working with international students in China, Hong Kong and Switzerland along with pupils in the UK and have in some cases continued this tuition as they have started university.

4. I will also aim to improve your confidence in tackling exam questions as this can be a barrier for many students. Exposure to exam questions is one technique for ensuring that students feel confident and prepared for their upcoming exams. You will see the progress made by doing this.

5. I provide feedback to parents (if applicable) and this enables them to be part of the process and see the impact of the sessions.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I love teaching psychology so private tutoring is really enjoyable for me. I especially like teaching those who share my enjoyment and interest for the subject material! It is really rewarding to watch students develop a strong understanding of the content and become more skilled at answering questions and making links between different topics.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I didn't like research methods when I first started studying at degree level, however I found that once I had done my own piece of research in my dissertation, that I could see the whole picture a lot more and the understanding for statistics became a lot clearer. I think as long as you embed the research methods into a tangible piece of research it is much easier to understand. My masters is in forensic psychology so in terms of my favourite subjects it is probably teaching the forensic unit.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My psychology teacher at sixth form was a colleague and now a friend so I would definitely say she inspired me to study psychology.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, confidence in your students, understanding, the ability to reassure and explain concepts in more than one way.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I had no idea what I wanted to do in sixth form until I started studying my A level in psychology and from then on I knew that's what I wanted to work towards in my degree and masters.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
I sometimes find the A level specification a little limiting as there are many areas of psychology that I would like to be able to teach. Things that I studied at university so topics such as health and psychopharmacology. But it is good to know that these are being studied by university students who also may need a tutor!
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I am a teacher by trade and therefore I enjoy most elements of teaching! However even if I wasn't I would still be doing something in the field of psychology as it is where my passion lies.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?
I have 12 years experience of teaching a wide range of pupils and therefore I believe that I am the ideal person to support with any level of psychological study.
