About Duncan
- What kind of experience do you have?
As a Private Music and Instrumental tutor I have been working in the Leeds/Harrogate area for over 7 years and have gradually built up the number of pupils taught through ‘word of mouth’ recommendations. I currently teach a variety of lessons to pupils ranged in age from 8 to 55, studying a variety of instruments, including Trumpet and Trombone, Keyboard and Piano as well as Associated Board Theory, GCSE Music and A Level Music. The pupils I teach are regularly entered for examinations and I have a 100% pass rate. These results include pupils gaining their Grade 8 Trumpet and Grade 8 Theory. I communicate with both pupils and parents to arrange lessons and my pupils value my flexibility and welcome how accommodating I am in this process. I have worked with pupils of a variety of ages as part of my previous roles at Boston Spa Music Centre and Elmete Partnership of school Orchestra. At Boston Spa Music Centre, which ran on a Saturday Morning, my role was that of instrumental tutor and ensemble leader. During My time at Boston Spa Music Centre I ran a variety of classes, with huge success, regularly increasing numbers, including Beginner and Intermediate recorders, Brass Lessons, Theory Lessons, Brass Ensemble and Community Orchestra. The musicians I taught ranged between the ages of 5 and 50. The classes were designed as a fun music making experience to either enhance music making activities already been undertaken, e.g. at school, or to provide and a safe and fun music making experience for those who wanted to learn who hadn’t had the opportunity to previously. I have taught full time at both Bradford Cathedral Community College and Bradford Academy. I have delivered good quality Music lessons at KS3 and as well as Examination Music Courses at both KS4 & 5 with a 100% pass rate. Each child should show progression and achieve at the highest level they are capable of. I would quickly develop an understanding of the schools structures and systems and would then carefully plan all lessons to ensure students learn through achievable and practical activities, whilst also being flexible and varied, for the differing needs of the students in each Key Stage and in each class. Each student should be engaged and motivated in their learning therefore it is essential to have an effective curriculum and schemes for learning that meets the needs of all and the students feel has value and a purpose. Continuity and consistency are essential across all lessons and activities therefore I would regularly ensure I would consult with designated members of staff. I enjoy all aspects of extra-curricular activities and believe that extra-curricular is an important part of school education as it develops and enriches all students, not just those who excel; therefore extra-curricular should be accessible and available to all. One of the most important aspects of extra-curricular is working with new people in different environments. I have organised and been involved with numerous concerts, in and out of school, music activity days, vocal workshop days, and productions including Grease, Cinderella, The Wiz and Hairspray. I have used my technical music knowledge to produce recordings, for example choirs and instrumental groups. Music should engage a wide variety of learners by providing activities they are interested in. These should incorporate Traditional, Modern, British and World Music’s, in a variety of performance situations, as well as embracing all new technologies available. As someone who has experienced a wide variety of musical activities, I would use the skills I have learnt to provide sessions which would enrich all students.
