About Felicity

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching privately for many years, with pupils ranging from age 6 to 60s, from absolute beginners to coaching at professional level. I am Singing Teacher for Spotlites Theatre Company in Chatham, Kent, and Vocal Tutor to the Choristers of Croydon Cathedral.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at the Royal College of Music. I studied voice with Tim Evans Jones, and vocal pedagogy with Russel Smythe. I also had the privilege to work closely with Roger Vignoles and Simon Lepper (Art Song), Jane Manning and Michaela Haslam (contemporary repertoire), Lucy Schaufer (stagecraft) and many others. I sang in masterclasses with Sarah Walker and Dame Felicity Palmer.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

One of my private students is head chorister of his school choir and sang with the Diamond Choir at St Paul's Cathedral for the Queen's Jubilee. I have 9 students at Spotlites who are all studying musical theatre and popular repertoire. Some are beginners and others are very experienced performers who will audition for top theatre schools.

About the lesson

  • All Levels

All languages in which the lesson is available :

English

I enjoy getting to know my students' individual strengths and insecurities (we all have both!) and helping them find confidence and enjoyment in their abilities.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

-voice: classical singing, musical theatre, jazz, pop (the instrument is the same)
-lyric diction, particularly English, French and German, also Italian and Spanish
-music theory and musicianship
-violin
-keyboard

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Master of Vocal Performance (with Distinction) from the Royal College of Music, a Master of Music in Musicology (with Distinction) from the New Zealand School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

I speak fluent French (I have a BA Hons in French from Victoria University of Wellington, and lived in France for over a year), good German (Goethe Institut Level B1:2, and lived in Germany for several months), am learning Spanish (Vamos Institut, Holborn), and I studied lyric diction in French, German and Italian at the Royal College of Music.

I have ABRSM Grade 8 Violin (1996) and studied violin for a year at Conservatoire level.

I have studied the Meisner Acting Technique at the Wellington Actors' Studio, and the Estill Vocal Method (levels 1&2) at Waikato University.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 for one hour or £20 for a half hour lesson taught at my house, or in my immediate neighbourhood. I add another £5 for travel to your house (ie £25 or £35) in London up to zone 3, but we might need to negotiate a bit more if you live outside of zone 3 (it's a combination of time and expense: often I don't mind paying for travel if you're easy to get to).

- Where do you teach?

I teach at home in South East London (SE6), or can travel to your house for a slightly higher fee. I am happy to travel to all areas of London, Croydon, and the South and South East.

- When are you available?

As a freelance musician, my timetable is very flexible and I can work with you to find a time to suit. I like to fix a regular time slot for each student, but I'm happy to work week to week on a flexible basis if that suits you better (or fortnightly or monthly if that suits your budget or schedule). I do have regular commitments on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, but can be available the rest of the week.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and levels. I enjoy working with children, and I'm particularly interested in unbroken boys' voices and the transition to adult voice. I can offer coaching leading up to an audition or performance, or can help diagnose and fix vocal faults for those experiencing discomfort while singing. I'm happy to take on regular students, or just see you for one or two sessions on a paritucular piece.

I have also worked with a lot of absolute beginners who want to sing but think they can't (rest assured that if you want to sing, then you are not tone deaf!).

For keyboard and violin, I teach beginners to intermediate.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I have prepared students for ABRSM exams, including aural, sightreading, and theory, and I currently have students working towards grades 3, 5 and 6. I'm also very familiar with the requirements for GCSE and A-Levels, Trinity Guildhall exams in classical singing and musical theatre, and ABRSM Music Medals.

If you do want to do an exam (and exams aren't for everyone) then I can help you decide which exam and which level is right for you.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

For singing lessons, it's important that we get to know each other face to face, to understand the way we work, and to be able to really hear each other with the best sound quality there is (ie live!), so I don't offer online music lessons straight away. Once we have been working together for a while, it's possible for me to help you over skype, or even over the phone, but only in extreme situations (like if you're really worried about something leading up to an exam or an audition, and we simply can't arrange a live lesson).

I will always send you useful recordings and videos and scores via the internet, but that's all part of the service.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

No two voices are exactly alike, but they all work in a similar way. I want to help you get to know and understand your unique instrument, and, most importantly, to really love and appreciate the way it feels and sounds when it's working well. And when your voice works well, then you have the freedom to make expressive and musical choices in your singing. That's when your personality and enjoyment starts to really shine through, and for me, that's the most satisfying thing about being a singing teacher.
