About Julian

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am an ex-English and Drama teacher with plenty of experience in education and industry. My career to date has spanned teaching, educational technology, IT course design and senior posts in people management. My career’s concentration on development and learning has taken place within a variety of cultural contexts across both the public and private sectors. This variety has given me a rich mix of insights, skills and values of immediate relevance to coaching and tuition. I have spent considerable time living and working in Continental Europe in both Italy and France. When working in industry I became very familiar with the challenge of communicating with colleagues from a variety of cultures using digital communication platforms and teleconferencing. This has sensitised me to online communications and trained me as an active listener.

I have a full current enhanced CRB certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

The Oxford University course on Effective Online Tuition provided a solid pedagogic foundation for applying digital technology to enhance learning. It is a very practical course and is itself a brilliant example of how an effective online tutor can 'facilitate' learning and self-discovery through establishing collaborative groups of online learners.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I had great pleasure helping out online a number of A level students studying English Literature as they came up towards their exams from April through to June. I soon became fully immersed in a wide range of Jacobean drama, Romantic poetry and Gothic novels. Although the subject matter is interesting, the main pleasure comes from seeing these students develop in confidence and self-assurance as they are introduced to themes and ideas that they then link into their existing knowledge to form breakthroughs of understanding. I also had the privilege to take one student all the way through the Geography A level during the year with 3 hours of tuition a week. It was intensely satisfying to see him develop over time a geographical frame of mind, to grow in his understanding of the concepts and to engage with so many issues of crucial importance to our times.

About the lesson

I enjoy face to face tuition but am also committed to online teaching since it demands structure and offers highly interactive learning supported by multi-media content. It works!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

My primary subject is English which I teach at GCSE and GCE level. I also have a great interest in both History and Geography and have experience in home tutoring Geography at AS and A2. Beyond these subjects I also teach study skills including essay writing and have developed online courses for this and for managing online learning.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a degree in English and American Literature from the University of Kent at Canterbury followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Secondary English and Drama. I have maintained my professional development through taking CPD courses such as the recent 'Effective Online Tuition' course run by the University of Oxford.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 per session for individual online tuition and for small groups of up to 4 students. Discounts are applied to those wanting more than one hour per week.

- Where do you teach?

My speciality is on-line tuition and developing effective online learners but I am very happy to offer home visits within North West London.

- When are you available?

I am available Monday to Friday both during the day and evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach KS4 and post-16 students for the GCSE, IGCSE and GCE exams. I also teach study skills to post-16 and college or university undergraduates.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for both the IGCSE and GCSE exams as well as A level GCEs.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I use Skype for voice, video and file sharing links and other Internet-based tools when needed including interactive whiteboards and mind mapping software. I also use Wikis, Twitter and Blogs as ways of enriching learning.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you feel any of the topics on your courses seem either a little dull or confusing, use personal tuition to give you the fresh perspective you need to make the connections that will bring out your own understanding.
