About Marilena

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have much experience tutoring and motivating children, teenagers and young adults.

Prior to tutoring German in Cardiff and London during my studies, I taught German as a foreign language at a German-based language school (Global Idiom). My hometown Hannover is the only city in Germany without any local accent (Hochdeutsch). I also picked up certain methods from my mother, who is also a German teacher.

After graduating from highschool I worked for two years in the State Theatre of Lower-Saxony learning everything of importance related to Dramatic Arts.
I have worked as a project-based freelance teacher in Practical Filmmaking and Drama for troubled youth, employed by the city council of Hannover and also taught Film Production and Acting to 6th form students. I'm proud to say their films even made it into a Student Film Festival.
During my BA I tutored more advanced Acting students at the International Filmschool of Wales.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Additional training includes participating in the famed Meisner Technique workshops (Acting) run by Stephen Bailey of the NFTS and I have also been mentored by Hollywood Directors Richard Kwietniowski and Gil Bettman, International documentary filmmaker Florence Ayisi as well as playwright Sam Snape.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Writer's guild and Women in Film and TV.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students include a five-year old girl called Ella, whom I tutor in Basic German; Joe, a 20-year old University student, whom I tutor in Acting and Creative Writing and 6th former Louise who I also tutor in German and Essay Writing.

About the lesson

Guten Tag! I'm a native German speaker and hold a Film BA from the International Filmschool Wales and an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths. My passion is to mentor young people and help them achieve their goals through individual tutoring.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I tutor German at all levels from primary school to A level and university. I can also function as a conversation partner for people wanting speaking practice, rather than full tuition and also offer translation, accent coaching and proof-reading.

With very young children (under 8), I tutor German by playing, whilst speaking in German, hence teaching them the basic words and sentence structures in a fun environment.

All my lessons can be conducted completely in German or English, however the students and their parents prefer.

I also teach Acting, Drama, Media Studies and Creative Writing and have extensive experience of working with children and teenagers in this area. Acting classes are not only for young actors but help build self-confidence and trust. My students become more pro-active and loose their fear of speaking in public.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a Master's degree in Creative Writing (including storytelling, structure and professional script editing) from Goldsmith's, University of London as well as a First Class BA (Hons) in Film Directing and Production from The International Filmschool of Wales.
I hold a German Abitur (A-Level) from the Elsa-BrÃ¤ndstrÃ¶m Gymnasium in Hannover with majors in Art, and both German and English.

- How much do you charge?

I charge 30 pounds per hour for all my lessons.

When I work as a conversational partner for more advanced students I charge 15 pounds per hour or 10 pounds per half hour.

Correcting an essay or piece of creative writing and giving in depth feedback (usually via email) takes around an hour for a 1500-2000 word essay and I am meticulous in my time keeping.

- Where do you teach?

I live in East Dulwich and tutor anywhere in the South East but can travel to Central London at an additional cost of 5 pounds.
I tutor at the student's home or library nearby and for more informal German conversation a cafÃ© has proven to be the right casual environment.

- When are you available?

As I am working as a freelancer I'm very flexible and can do afternoons, evenings and weekends. Special arrangements can be made for school holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all levels and ages including: 11+, GCSE, As and A –Levels, University, Drama school entry.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can tutor via Skype if the student has a good internet connection and receive essays and pieces of Creative Writing via email as well as sending feedback that way. The hourly rate remains the same.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I provide a friendly atmosphere, where the student can unfold their full potential without undue pressure or fear.
I truly care about my students and make sure every single one of them can achieve their goals and make swift progress whilst helping them to discover their own passion and motivation for their chosen subject.
