About Tom
Tom is a passionate Science & Math teacher with more than 15 years of experience in classroom and outdoor education settings. He began teaching with an undergrad degree in Environmental Science before later earning a master's degree in Natural Science Education. Tom's lifelong fascination with exploration drives his professional endeavors and he enjoys sharing the thrill of discovery with others. His instructional philosophy is centered around authentic experiences that support holistic learning and true mastery.
For fun, Tom likes to do outdoor activities like hiking, camping, biking, paddling, and snowboarding. He also likes to cook, watch TV, read, and game. Tom lives with his dog.

I believe that learning should be fun and relevant. My style incorporates experience into learning. Any concept that we cover will be connected to real-world application. The goal is to gain knowledge that not only supports high academic performance but helps build a working knowledge of the world around us, allowing learners to confidently make use of accumulated wisdom.
These lessons are for middle school, high school, tech school, and undergraduate level students who would like to strengthen their Math & Science skills through authentic learning.
We'll start by getting to know each other and establishing some goals. Then, we'll collaborate on a plan for achieving those goals and get to work. At the start of each session, we'll check in on our goals and discuss any stressors that may be relevant. Though I encourage learners to share about their lives, you are free to engage at your comfort level.
The lesson plan of a session will be customized for the learner's needs, goals, and availability. Typically, we'll start with a question or prompt that activates prior knowledge on the subject or generates interest. I like these to be related to the real world. Next, we'll talk about how that example relates to the content and get into the main ideas. We'll do some practice and investigate additional concepts that become important during our discussion. Near the end of the session, we'll debrief then check back in with our goals and plan for next time.
