About Michael

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a performer I have extensive experience as both an orchestral and chamber musician and as a soloist. I perform regularly as a soloist in the Chester recital series, and have performed with many orchestras in the North West including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as a freelance oboist.

I have a lot of experience of working with musicians of all ages and stages of progression. I understand the enthusiasm of youngsters and their keenness to play, and also the fact that confidence doesn't come to everyone. Often a good talent is hidden behind a lack of confidence, and just a bit of encouragement can do wonders for a young musician. I have found this to be the case perhaps even more so with older people, perhaps coming back to music after a period of not playing, where the ability is there but not the confidence. These non - musical issues are all things that are addressed in our lessons.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

none

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music where my teachers on the oboe were Hugh McKenna, Melinda Maxwell and Jonathan Small. My Cor Anglais teachers were Tom Davey and Rachael Pankhurst. At Leeds I studied with Christine Swain.

On the Wirral I leant the piano with Anne Davies and Eva Warren.

I am a 27 year old oboe player currently based on the Wirral. If you are hoping to start playing the Oboe, Cor Anglais or Piano, or looking for a new teacher, the I'd love to hear from you.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Being an oboe player, I teach the Oboe and the Cor Anglais. I also teach the piano, which I started learning to play at a young age. I also teach the ABRSM theory grades. I am happy to help students prepare for performance grades if they wish, although there is no pressure on them to take grades if they wish not to.

Along with learning about the instrument of choice, I think it is important for a student to learn around their instrument and learn as much about other aspects of music as possible. To that end, my lessons are not purely about the playing of a piece that we may be studying at the time. Along with playing technique, (and in the case of the oboe and cor, quality sound production), emphasis is given to an improved general knowledge of music theory and historical context, interpretation and techniques to improve overall musicianship, such as the development of the ear for tuning and ensemble awareness. Lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of individual students.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Please feel free to look at my attached c.v

- How much do you charge?

Usual prices :

£25 per 60 minutes
£20 per 45 minutes
£15 per 30 minutes

- Where do you teach?

I teach at home and at pupils' houses depending on which suits my students best. Students without a piano may wish to come to my house, for either their piano lessons or for the benefit of piano accompaniment to their oboe/cor pieces.

- When are you available?

Anytime during the week up to 8pm, and Saturdays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach anyone of any age or level

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

The ABRSM exams mainly.

There is absolutely no pressure to take exams though. And where a student does want to take an exam, I try to keep the lessons as rounded as possible, and not purely based on exam material. I often think that young musicians suffer as a result of just working through the grades, finishing one and going straight on to the other. We miss out on so much excellent repertoire, and the chance to develop as an all round better musician. Having grade 8 at a young age is nice, but not at the expense of enjoyment and a wide knowledge of techniques and repertoire.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I think it is very important to have face to face lessons. We learn so much from having things demonstrated for us by our teacher. Something hard to do online.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I have been learning and playing music since I was 5 years old. It has been brilliant fun and a massive part of my life. Whether you fancy learning music as a hobby or taking you're oboe playing more seriously, I can help you reach your targets and enjoy your music on the way.
