About Sue

- What kind of experience do you have?

Over 30 years teaching and tutoring. Have taught Maths to A level and supported dyslexic students in schools for over 30 years, most recently as a Head of Maths; I have also held the post of SENCO, testing and supporting special needs students. I am now self employed, running my own tutoring business called Think Infinity.

I have had extensive experience of privately tutoring students of all ages and have helped many to exceed the grade they needed to achieve their goals at GCSE or A Level Maths. In addition, I have helped adult students to pass professional tests involving Maths and to pass GCSE Maths.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Dyslexia and dyscalculia support with secondary age students. GCSE Maths students, A level Maths students, adult student doing HNC Engineering. Recently helped adult student achieve exceptionally high marks on a GCSE Maths equivalency test for entrance onto teacher training and a 16 year old student to jump from an E grade to a C grade at GCSE in 2 months of tutoring (and hard work on the part of the student!).

About the lesson

I am a full-time Maths tutor who was also trained by Tony Buzan as an instructor in mind-mapping and memory skills. I incorporate study skills techniques into all my online lessons so that students can build up a file of notes for exam revision. The way I teach is influenced by my extensive experience as a senior examiner for both GCSE and A Level Maths, and teaching students how to break down a Maths problem into 'bite size' chunks is at the heart of what I do, giving my students the confidence to tackle problems by themselves. I also hold a Diploma in Special Educational Needs and have developed methods to help students with Dyslexia, Aspergers and ADHD/ADD achieve their potential in Maths. Online, I tutor with ZOOM and a visualiser - this brilliant gadget allows me to simulate online the experience of having a tutor sitting next to the student in their home, as I can live stream what I am writing directly to the student's screen whilst being seen in the video chat.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE Maths, IGCSE Maths , A Level Maths (including Further Maths and International), the Maths content of any BTEC,etc, course at a college of further education, equivalency testing for GCSE Maths (e.g. to enter teacher training).

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

ZOOM group and 1 to 1 lessons. I use a visualiser to live stream what I am writing whilst talking to the student in the online, video meeting. This simulates the experience of having a tutor next to the student in their home.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My approach is very different to what you have experienced in a classroom - for example, I get you to 'think out loud' because i don't just want to teach you facts, I also want to make sure that you really understand the topic we are covering. I will often answer your questions with another question or ask you some probing questions at the start of a new topic - to make sure you haven't misunderstood something in the past. My students tell me they like my 'bubbles' - notes in coloured 'bubbles' on the side of their pages, where I give them hints and tips tailored to what they find difficult or hadn't realised in the past. (Many of my students start making their own 'bubbles' in lessons for other subjects at school and say they are a great revision tool too).
