About the lesson
When tutoring Reading Comprehension I try to evaluate what skills each student has and begin building at that level. That could mean helping a child break down sounds, translating sounds into letters, then combing the letters to form words. There are many English phonemes to master and many different approaches to teaching them. For instance teach similar shaped letters or letters that have similar sounds.
The use of computer programs, note cards, games, etc. Learning to read nonsense words from books isn't always an effective approach.
Methods of teaching reading should be a personalized learning experience.
Starting with words a student is familiar with will make the task easier and rewarding.
After Comprehension has been achieved on new words students can draw pictures that go with the new words and put them in a folder to track progress and also create their own reading folder.
Weekly, I schedule time to go over sight words for practice.
Another helpful source of reading Comprehension is allowing the student to read material that most interest them finding favorite subject books often boost motivation.
Letting students pick what they prefer to read within the area of Comprehension.
On occasion pick a more challenging book to see if the students advanced.
Keeping the students reading Level personal as not to become discouraged by advanced students and to avoid negative feelings and comparisons to others.
Allowing the student to create their own content with site words from their word folders and discussion about what they have created, this will make for easier Comprehension because they will be connected to stories.
