About Stephen

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over thirty years' experience of teaching Modern Languages at secondary level, most of which were spent at a grammar school in Dorset. I have been tutoring for the past five years, and my students have included students of all the languages offered at a variety of levels. More recently I have also taught Latin from beginner to A level.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students include one student of A level French and another who is taking GCSE Latin this year, having leant the language from scratch with me over the past two years. Last year one of my students gained a place to read Classics at Oxford University. I am also currently teaching two adult students who are taking German courses at the Open University. The research which is required when preparing such a variety of lessons is a fascinating experience, and I hope that this interest is shared by my students.

I have recently retired from school teaching. I give every student an assessment for individual strengths and weaknesses, and lessons are prepared with his or her needs in mind, including listening material from the internet and news websites.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

German is my main subject from beginner to university level, and Spanish, French and Latin to A level. I can also help with Classical Greek to GCSE level. I hold the CELTA qualification teacher of English as an additional language.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

My degree is an MA in Modern Languages from Oxford University, and I gained a PGCE from the University of London Institute of Education. I hold A levels at grade A in German, French, Latin and Spanish, the CELTA qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages, and a Diploma in Translation awarded by the Institute of Linguists.

- How much do you charge?

My fee is £25 per hour up to A level, and £30 for university-level work in German. I charge 45p per mile for travel costs. The travelling charge obviously does not apply if the lesson takes place at my home.

- Where do you teach?

With students of school age, I usually travel to their homes, but lessons can take place at my home if this is more convenient. In this case I try to arrange for my wife to be at home during the lesson if possible, and to make sure that she greets the student on arrival. With adult students, we arrange a venue to our convenience.

- When are you available?

As I am now retired, my diary of tuition times is very flexible and includes daytimes, evenings, weekends and the school holidays.

Secondary school, Higer Education age, adults.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE, AS level, A level, BA, translation qualifications.

I have come to believe that knowing another language is a bit like having another brain, and the hard work of learning is repaid in a lifetime of increased awareness. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of European languages and literature with you.
