What To Prepare When You Conduct English Lessons For Kids?

First time teaching English to kids? Don't worry as we will be sharing some tips and teaching materials that you can incorporate during your ESOL lessons planning.

Tip 1: Get your flashcards ready (in-person/online lessons)

You can be as creative as possible when it comes to teaching your student through flashcards. Make sure to use clear and attractive images to link the alphabets or words that you are planning to teach them.

It is a good way to introduce new concepts to them in a fun manner and help them in their daily observation when they link the words and images together.

Here are some of the examples/ideas that you can use for your flashcards:

  • Alphabets
  • Body parts
  • Animal names
  • Colours
  • Numbers
  • Clothes
  • Vehicles
  • Weather
  • Time

Tip 2: Teach them new vocabulary and sentences through videos and songs

Many kids enjoy watching and listening to nursery songs and short cartoon clips. This is a good activity to get them excited to engage actively with you.

Make sure to make eye contact with them when you are teaching them a new song and allow them sufficient time to follow your actions and lyrics.

You can also let your students learn about phonics through songs and cartoons so that they can remember the right pronunciation for different alphabets from A to Z.

Tip 3: Provide interactive quizzes and worksheets during lessons

Remember that it is all about interaction and exposure when it comes to teaching English to kids!

Ask them questions and encourage them to raise their hands and reply even if they are unsure of the right answer. You can also prepare colouring papers and let them draw simple images of a word that you just taught them.

For younger kids, you can also give them worksheets to join the dots for alphabets or easier words. For older kids, you can give them spelling worksheets.

To motivate them, you can also give them a small reward such as a sticker of their favourite character or candy after they attempt to answer your questions.

Another tip when teaching kids is to make sure that the class duration is within 30 minutes per session. Make sure you allocate sufficient breaks in between, especially for online English classes.

What Are Some English Classes That You Can Plan For Adult Learners?

As an ESOL tutor, you get to meet students from all walks of life. As a matter of fact, many adult learners are keen to take various English classes even upon the completion of their secondary school education or tertiary level education.

Depending on their needs (studies/job requirements/educational purposes), here are a few types of English classes that you can come out with and teach in the long run.

a) Business Communication English

Most of your potential students for this class are looking forward to learning more topics about Business and expanding their vocabulary for both written and spoken English.

It is best to assess your student's level in the four language components (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) before you start the first lesson.

Some of the learning outcomes for Business Communication English are listed below:

  • Write emails in English
  • Participate smoothly in job interviews
  • Read articles and reports on business-related topics
  • Deliver speeches confidently
  • Negotiate fluently during business meetings
  • Build strong relationships and lasting impressions with colleagues and clients

b) Conversational English

For many non-native English speakers in Malaysia, it is often a struggle to speak English fluently with the right grammar and pronunciation at all times.

When you are teaching adult learners conversational English, you have to pay attention to how they normally speak (the commonly used vocabulary, their sentence structures, pronunciation).

That being said, always encourage your students to speak up or ask any questions, even during normal conversations with their friends outside class too.

Questions are a good way to begin a conversation. You do not have to be the only one who asks all the questions during the whole lesson.

Remind your students that it is okay to pause before replying to your question. They can take their time to form their sentences. What matters the most is CLARITY in terms of their expression.

You can also ask them to record themselves talking about their favourite topic for their homework. Furthermore, you can also introduce to them some interesting podcasts to improve their listening skills too!

c) Preparatory Courses for IELTS or other language tests

For IELTS preparatory lessons, you have to first educate your students about the format, grading scheme (from Band 1 to Band 9) and the overview of the papers.

Like any examination, you have to equip your students with tips to do well by using sample papers and past year questions. This will allow your students to be familiar with the structure of the test as well as the allocated time to answer every section in the papers.

Tested componentsDescription
Listening Duration: 30 minutes
-4 recordings

-40 questions
- 3 long texts/passages from books, journals and magazines
Academic Writing Duration: 60 minutes
-2 writing tasks
