Picture this.
You're suddenly sent to sit for an art exam. There are no guidelines given to you beforehand.
It's every student's worse nightmare.
We bet it's even scarier when you will be tested on different components of arts and be graded differently.
Imagine how lost you will feel when you have absolutely no idea how to secure a good grade for your STPM Seni Visual subject.
Not to worry, in this article, we will go through the strategies to ace different papers on this subject and how to have the best preparation to score well consistently throughout the three semesters.
How To Get Full Score For Your STPM Seni Visual Paper 1?
You'll want to begin the semester with a good headstart by mastering all the sections that will be asked in your Paper 1. After all, this paper has the highest weightage [40%] among all the assessments throughout the three semesters.
This written test comprises 3 sections that will test you on short structured questions and essay questions based on the visual topics that you have studied in your first semester.
Here are some key points to help you score well for each section:
Section A [35 marks]
- Identify the keywords of the questions
For section A, you have to answer all the structured questions. That's why you need to give your answers in a precise and concise manner. If the keywords are "namakan", "nyatakan", then you only have to give a direct answer. If the keywords are "jelaskan", "bincangkan", "terangkan" then you have to give more elaboration.
- Pay attention to the mark allocation for each question
The other method to score for Section A is to take note of the mark allocation of the question. Let's say the keyword of the question is "jelaskan" and the mark allocation is 6 marks, then you should plan your answers to have at least 3 points and 3 elaborations.

Section B [30 marks] and Section C [15 marks]
- Choose the right essay options
For Section B and Section C, you are given the choice to choose which essay to answer. In Section B, you have to answer 2 essay questions out of 4 options whereas, in Section C, you need to answer 1 essay question out of 2 options. It's best to choose the question where you can list plenty of points and examples to support your answer.
- Have a proper essay structure
This leads us to our next point. Many students often lose marks when they fail to write a proper introduction and conclusion when they are answering the essays. Hence, it's important to plan the draft of the essay before you write them down for real in your answer sheet.
- Provide accurate analysis in terms of facts, elaborations, examples and comparison
When it comes to essay questions, examiners will review your points in terms of whether your points directly fulfill the requirement of the question in terms of clarity, quantity and quality of your facts and elaborations.
What Do Examiners Look For In Your STPM Seni Visual Paper 2?
Let's move on to Paper 2, the practical drawing assessment that you will undertake in your second semester. You will be given 3 hours to complete your artwork. The total mark for this paper is 70 marks.
You can refer to the below four evaluation criteria as you practice and plan for your artwork.
-
Usage of the right drawing techniques
Firstly, the examiner will look at the basic drawing elements (application of lines, space, contrast, patterns etc) in your final artwork.
Some of the drawing techniques that you will come across during your Form 6 studies include hatching, crosshatching, sgraffito and blending. These techniques can then be incorporated into figurative drawings, technical drawings, conceptual drawings, illustrative drawings etc.

Expression of ideas
Secondly, the examiners will see if the presentation of the final artwork is well thought out and in alignment with the given question.
Whether it is in the form of seting or gubahan (pengkaryaan/perekaan), examiners will look at how you translate your initial sketches or ideas into the final drawing. For example, the process to transform your sketch of a logo into a real logo design for a product.
-
Creativity in problem-solving (integration)
Thirdly, the examiners will also review your choice of mediums, angle, background composition, scaling of various objects and subjects in the drawing/design to create a sense of balance, oneness and order.
-
Demonstration of personal style
Last but not the least, your artwork must reflect your style, whether it is in the form of colour combination, image formation, usage of space and contrast.
