Let's go

What are the advantages of having a UEC certification?

Are you aware that the UEC certification is considered equivalent to an A-Level certificate?

Although the UEC started as an initiative by Malaysian independent Chinese middle schools to safeguard and develop Chinese education, the purpose of the syllabus extends beyond just facilitating standardised examinations for students in their lower and upper secondary school years.

The objectives of UEC Malaysia are to:

  1. Get an overall unified assessment of the academic performance of independent Chinese secondary schools;
  2. Create favourable conditions for UEC graduates to pursue their higher studies and employment;
  3. Provide local and foreign higher academic institutions with the required academic authentication for graduates' admission to these institutions; and
  4. Act as an academic reference of employment for everyone regardless of social background.

In line with these objectives, the UEC benefits students who are seeking to further their studies not only in private colleges and universities in Malaysia, but also at most higher education institutions in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, the UK and more.

As a result of the UEC certification's outstanding recognition by these institutions, UEC graduates can expect to advance their career prospects in both the local and international scene. Not to mention that UEC Malaysia is one of the most economical pre-university education options in the country!

The cost of completion for the UEC is around RM5,000, including both tuition and examination fees.

Compare this price with a Foundation course in Malaysia which will cost you around RM8,000 per semester!

You should also know that studying for the UEC allows you to experience amazing Mandarin language-learning benefits.

What is the marking scheme for UEC exam papers?

Again, we will be looking at the final UEC exam that will determine your admission into your higher education institution of choice.

In addition to having more exam papers to sit for as compared to the Junior Middle Three exam, the Senior Middle Three exam corresponds to the final step in students' senior secondary education. While there are various subjects offered to senior students, there are also specialised subjects like Business Studies and Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering.

UEC benefits students who want to choose specific streams based on their career interests and goals. Below are the subjects offered to students in the senior level of UEC Malaysia which they will be assessed on at the end of their Senior Middle Three year:

  • Chinese Language
  • Malay Language
  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Advanced Mathematics
  • Advanced Mathematics I
  • Advanced Mathematics II
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Art
  • History
  • Geography
  • Business Studies
  • Bookkeeping & Accounts
  • Accounting
  • Economics
  • Computing & Information Technology
  • Basic Circuit Theory
  • Principles of Electronics
  • Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
  • Digital Logic

The marking scheme of the UEC exam papers that students will sit for in the Senior Middle Three year generally follows these rules:

  1. There are usually two papers to complete for every subject.
  2. For the two papers, Paper 1 usually consists of Multiple-Choice Questions while Paper 2 usually has Subjective Questions.
  3. Paper 2 often carries more weightage than Paper 1 (60% to 80% of the total marks for that subject).

You can check this link out for a detailed look at the marking scheme according to each subject for UEC Malaysia.

To effectively prepare for the UEC exam, identify the key areas you should focus on for all subjects so that you can create and follow an individualised study plan that fits your needs. The subject content may get more challenging as you approach your final UEC year and it's best to get a headstart!

Follow these tips to ace your UEC 2024 exams.

Let's go

Is UEC equivalent to STPM?

Although the UEC certification is a qualification recognised by many universities, it is still not accepted for entry into public university programmes in Malaysia.

Students and parents may worry about going for the UEC certification since its lack of recognition in the country is not viewed as a major priority of the education ministry.

If that is the case, is the UEC equivalent to STPM and other pre-university programmes?

To date, over 1,000 overseas national and private higher education institutions have admitted UEC holders as undergraduates, including these prestigious academic institutions:

  • Monash University, Malaysia
  • National University of Singapore
  • Seoul National University, South Korea
  • The University of Sheffield, UK (with IELTS or TOEFL certification)
  • Yale University, USA (with IELTS or TOEFL certification)

Indeed, taking the UEC is a fantastic channel to get into global universities, similar if you were to take STPM or A-Levels. Take note that some universities will require foreign students to attach their IELTS or TOEFL certificates during applications as proof of English proficiency.

Are there any differences in the marking scheme of UEC and STPM?

Let's compare the grading systems of STPM and UEC Malaysia with their equivalent grade points:

CGPASTPMUEC

3.67A-A2
3.33B+B3
3.00BB4

2.33C+B6
2.00CC7
1.67C-C8
1.33D+C9
1.00D-

It's worth mentioning that as long as UEC holders obtain average-to-good results in their UEC exam, i.e. 5B's and above, they can apply for direct entry into many undergraduate programmes!

How to master the marking scheme for UEC Malaysia

If you have decided to go for the UEC certification, it is of course essential to master the marking scheme for the UEC exam so that you have a clear idea of your exam format and how to obtain the most marks in your papers.

In your final year that is Senior Middle Three, you should already be an expert in this marking scheme!

One of the smartest things you can do to master the marking scheme is to increase your practice with past-year papers. This practice will be a quick way for you to get to know the exam format for each subject while still testing your knowledge of subject topics. You can even time yourself as if you were sitting for a real exam to see if you can answer all the questions within the time limit!

We highly recommend that you get your hands on reliable resources and papers for UEC 2024.

Some students carry out their revisions while having their mobile devices nearby or playing loud music in the background. While these situations may not always pose a problem (you're lucky if you can focus in these instances!), they can still be distracting for those who need calm and quiet to complete their revisions.

Be sure to eliminate any distractions while you are studying, and if you need to listen to music at this time, opt for relaxing, instrumental music with no lyrics.

While you are getting to know the marking scheme of the UEC exam, you may lose the motivation to complete your past-year papers or quickly reach for your phone when you get bored. Try implementing a reward system to use when doing your revisions at home. The rewards you use should be inexpensive but enough to motivate you to study according to your schedule.

This could be as simple as getting to pet your cat or dog after 30 minutes of uninterrupted study.

It's also recommended that you choose rewards that are relaxing and appeal to your senses!
