How to Start Playing Badminton?

As you are well aware, badminton is a very popular sport all over the world. Most people do know the basics of playing badminton, but let us look at this sport and how you can start playing it.

Badminton is a pretty simple and straightforward game. Unlike other sports out there, it is so accessible that you pretty much start playing it as soon as you decide you want to and have the equipment needed.

There are many sports out there that require formal training for you to begin. Some examples of these are swimming and basketball and many more. Badminton on the other hand is a sport that is not only easy to learn but suits all ages

Although there are many badminton courts all over Malaysia, you can easily find children and adults playing badminton in parks as well as at their homes.

You will need a minimum of two people to play badminton. Two players will stand on opposite sides and the game begins when one player hits the shuttlecock using their rackets to the other player's side. The whole point of the game is to not let the shuttlecock fall to the ground.

If you are playing this sport in your home or the park, you will need to make sure that you have sufficient space to run around and hit the shuttlecock. Although playing on a badminton court is the best and most comfortable, you don't necessarily need it.

Now that you know the basics of playing badminton, let us look at the equipment you will need in order to play this sport.

What Equipment Do You Need to Play Badminton?

Badminton is undeniably an easy sport that is accessible to everyone. Yes, it is true that unlike many other sports out there, badminton can be played with minimal equipment and can be done without any formal training, although it will be much easier to have it. Let us look at some of the most important equipment you should have to play badminton.

Badminton Rackets

Badminton is a racket sport similar to tennis, ping pong, squash and many others. Simply put, for you to play badminton, you will need to have a badminton racket. If you google badminton rackets, you will quickly notice that there are a lot of badminton rackets available for purchase not only online but in physical stores near you.

There are generally three main types of rackets available: Beginner, Intermediate and professional badminton rackets. These rackets not only differ in style but also their quality, weight and of course, their price.

You can get beginner badminton rackets for as cheap as RM 20 all the way to professional rackets costing thousands of ringgit.

Before you jump into buying an expensive racket, we would suggest getting a beginner's racket first. This will give you an idea of what you are looking for. Some people prefer lighter rackets while others prefer slightly heavier ones. Only by playing badminton will you know what type of racket suits you best. Our coaches on Superprof will be able to guide you better in getting a racket that suits you best.

Shuttlecocks

Shuttlecock is another must-have when you play badminton. There are many kinds of shuttlecocks out there in the market with feather shuttlecocks being the most popular. In addition to these, there are also plastic shuttlecocks and hybrid shuttlecocks. So what is the difference between these three? Feather shuttlecocks, as its name suggests, are made out of duck or goose feathers. This type of shuttlecock is commonly used by intermediate and professional badminton players and is generally popular among most players. The plastic shuttlecock is mainly used by beginners due to its durability. Hybrid shuttlecocks are a combination of both feather and plastic shuttlecocks. These shuttlecocks are cheaper but tend to be inferior to feather shuttlecocks.

It's interesting to note that only two pieces of equipment are essential for starting to play badminton. In fact, these two items are all you really need to begin enjoying the sport. There are other accessories such as shoes and clothes that you can get to play badminton but these are not strictly needed and are merely optional.

Badminton Shoes

If you are looking to up your game in badminton, you should consider getting badminton shoes. Badminton shoes might look like a normal pair of trainers but this is not true. They are specifically designed for badminton players. So how are they different, you might be wondering. Badminton shoes have soles and grip patterns that are made specially for badminton. They give you better support and grip that will not only help you move better but also help reduce the chance of injuring yourself when you play badminton.

Badminton Attire

Just like most sports out there, badminton clothes are made light and sweat wicking cloth. They not only allow flexibility but also allow for players to move easily. When it comes to badminton clothes, more often than not, players tend to prefer shorts or skirts. These are preferred compared to long pants as they offer a better range of motion. Track pants, more often than not are avoided because they tend to make players sweat more and therefore make them very uncomfortable. The golden rule when it comes to choosing proper badminton clothes is comfort.
