Why is it important to study history?

Learning about history is important because it helps us understand our origins and how our society has been shaped over time. By learning about the triumphs and struggles of those who came before us, we gain a broader perspective on our own place in the world - just read the works of famous historians like Thucydides, Herodotus and Edward Gibbon.

In historian Patrick Allitt's TEDx talk "Why History Matters", he emphasises why understanding history helps us gain insights into current issues and make informed decisions for the future. He argues that historical knowledge helps contextualise current events, revealing patterns and consequences of past actions.

In Malaysia, history plays a special role in fostering unity within our multicultural society. By learning about the process of independence, the formation of the Federation of Malaya in 1957, and the creation of Malaysia in 1963, we gain appreciation for the sacrifices of our leaders and ordinary citizens who fought for freedom and sovereignty.

History also encourages us to celebrate Malaysia’s rich heritage. From the Malacca Sultanate, which was once a thriving trade hub, to the diverse migration patterns that brought Chinese, Indians, Malays and indigenous communities together, every event has contributed to our unique national identity. Knowing these roots helps us value traditions, respect differences, and strengthen harmony in today’s Malaysia.

Moreover, history teaches lessons for the future. The challenges of racial unity, economic development, and political stability in the past remind us to avoid repeating mistakes. For young Malaysians, studying history isn’t just about memorising dates: it’s about realising the importance of tolerance, resilience, and patriotism. Ultimately, history connects us to our shared story as Malaysians, inspiring us to build a stronger nation together.

Many places across Malaysia offer us a glimpse into the past - like Melaka's Dutch Square - and remind us of the historical events that have helped shape our country. Photo by Ihsan Adityawarman on Pexels.

How to effectively improve your history skills

Expanding your knowledge of history can be an enriching experience, especially with the wealth of resources available for every level.

A great place to start is by delving into comprehensive history books that cover broad periods and significant events. For a readable introduction to world history, consider books like "A Little History of the World" by E.H. Gombrich or "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari. These books offer engaging narratives that span across civilisations and epochs, providing a broad understanding of human history.

Engaging with primary sources such as historical documents, letters, and artefacts can offer a deeper understanding of the context and perspectives of the time. Malaysia is home to numerous world-class museums and historical sites, including the Borneo Cultures Museum, Kellie's Castle, and Fort Cornwallis, where you can immerse yourself in the country's rich past.

If you prefer personalised guidance and structured learning, consider private tutoring through Superprof Malaysia. Experienced history tutors can provide tailored lessons and expert insights into world history, whether you're aspiring towards a career as a historian or are looking to pass your SPM Sejarah paper. By regularly exploring a variety of resources, you can gain a more nuanced understanding of how historical events shape our present and future.
