Understanding Superprof's Platform

Not too long ago, learning was almost entirely tied to physical classrooms, fixed schedules and geographic boundaries. Today, education looks very different. The rise of technology has made learning easier through digital platforms and reshaped how we teach, learn and earn.

This transformation has also created income opportunities. More people look for flexible ways to earn, students take on part-time work, and seasoned individuals monetise their expertise. Teaching, in particular, has become a rewarding and scalable side income.

Among the many ways to turn your skills into income, tutoring has emerged as a popular and accessible option. Online tutoring is a flexible gig in Malaysia, with many earning between RM 800 and RM 5,000+ per month, depending on experience and demand1.

This is where Superprof comes in: founded in 2013 in Biarritz, France, Superprof began as a platform to connect academic tutors with learners in need of guidance. Today, it has grown into a global tutoring platform, connecting tutors with learners across academic subjects, hobbies, and job-related skills.

There are
36 million

tutors on the platform all around the world, teaching various subjects

As a tutor, you can create a profile at no cost, set your own rates, schedule lessons, and provide both virtual and in-person sessions. Once your profile is live, you don’t need to look for learners because those looking for your skills can find you.

All you need to do is make your profile stand out amongst others providing the same services.

Advantages of Teaching on Superprof

You can teach learners anywhere in the world without leaving your home, thanks to Superprof’s online capabilities. Even other countries like the UK or Japan, without actually flying there! Here are some of the benefits of teaching on the Superprof platform.

Flexibility and Autonomy
One of the biggest advantages of tutoring on Superprof is the flexibility to set your own schedule and lesson rates as a private tutor. You decide when to teach, how many sessions to take on, remote or in-person classes, and the subjects.
Access to a global student base
You can connect with students from all over the world. You can work with someone on the other side of the world or in other parts of Malaysia from where you are – thanks to virtual learning.
Support and resources
Our Superprof tutors are never on their own. Our customer care team is available to assist with any issues, from profile setup to handling disputes with learners. If you need to report a problem with a learner, you can easily do so through the support page, ensuring a safe and secure learning environment.

With Superprof, you enjoy flexibility, independence, and the opportunity to turn your expertise into a rewarding income.

How To Teach On Superprof

Becoming a tutor is simple and comes at no charge. You start by creating a profile detailing your expertise, background, and availability. You can highlight the subjects you teach – from English, maths, and science to languages, music, fitness, and career skills.

Some opt for a video introduction to connect with their potential learners. You can do this if your subject is easier to demonstrate visually.

Once your profile is live on the website, learners searching for guidance in a particular subject, location, or skill can find you. You don’t need to actively advertise, though there is an optional Pro Pass subscription if you want extra visibility and tools to grow your business.

When it comes to delivery modes, sessions can be conducted virtually or in person, depending on what works best for both you and the learner. We provide a safe space where learners are pre-screened and genuinely interested in learning, so you can focus on teaching without worrying about scams or unreliable inquiries.

Unlike traditional agencies, our educators are independent. You set your rates, choose your learners, and determine how many hours you work. There are no subscription fees, no commissions, and no interference in how you conduct your private sessions. Payments go straight into your account once a learner books a session.

This flexibility allows you to grow your business at your own pace while leveraging the platform’s global reach.

That doesn’t mean you’re alone. If you need help, our customer care team is always happy to assist with setting up your profile, improving your ad, or providing tips for success.

Join the Pro Club (Optional)

The Pro Pass is an optional subscription (RM400 per year) for educators who want to make their profiles stand out. Key benefits include:

  • More visibility – Your tutor ad is highlighted and more likely to be seen in search results.
  • Insurance for your listings – Extra protection and credibility for your profile.
  • Statistics and analytics – Access data on how often your profile is viewed and clicked, helping you improve your ad.
  • Dedicated support team – Priority help from our care team to assist with your profile and performance.

In short, the Pro Pass is a way for educators to increase their reach and refine their advertising on the website, but it remains completely optional. Many start with a profile at no cost and upgrade to Pro Club later if they want extra exposure or insights. Whichever option you choose, you have full control to teach, connect with learners, and grow your business on your own terms.

Creating Your Tutor Profile

Start by signing up at superprof.com.my and completing your tutor profile with accurate information. As mentioned above, the more detailed and informative your profile is, the more likely prospective students and clients are to select you for their supplemental learning needs.

Highlight your qualifications, background, and approach, whether you specialise in English, maths, science, languages, creative arts, or professional development. A formal photo helps enhance credibility, and you may also consider adding a short video introduction if your subject benefits from a demonstration. A clear, compelling profile ensures learners can easily find your services.

It’s not a requirement to have specific credentials to get started. However, having relevant qualifications or background can give you an advantage, especially when learners are seeking educators with a particular expertise.

For example, a parent of a child with special needs may prefer a tutor who has worked with similar learners. Ultimately, as long as you have the skills, expertise and knowledge to run sessions effectively and can tailor content to each participant, you’ll be set up for success.

While setting up your profile, you will be asked to enter details that help make your ad visible and attractive to learners. Here are some important elements to consider:

  • Create a clear and engaging title for your ad
  • Share background information about yourself and the subjects you offer
  • Indicate what type of lessons you provide - group or individual
  • Specify your delivery methods: virtual, the learner's home or your home; maybe a local gym or studio
  • The subjects youcover- don't limit yourself to just a couple!
  • The languages you can teach
  • State the levels you work with - primary, secondary, adult education and so on
  • Set your hourly rate
  • Answer interview questions

There is a list of interview questions you may answer to further enhance your profile so that prospective clients can know more about you. You have all the room you need to be as candid as you'd like, so don't be bashful about explaining how you're the Superprof for students in need of your knowledge.

Don’t worry, there is also a “good to know” guidance section that walks you through what to include, what to avoid, and what to keep in mind while completing your profile. Make sure to follow those tips carefully as you fill out your profile.

Setting Your Rates

All new educators are required to provide their first lesson free until they earn Super Tutor status. Alternatively, those who subscribe to the optional Pro Pass membership can remove the mandatory free first lesson requirement. Once you’ve taught several learners and received positive reviews, you may also qualify for Super Tutor status, which gives you greater control over your lessons.

However, the free lesson is only applicable for the first class. Any recurring classes will be charged at the rate you set. When it comes to lesson payment, you and your student can decide on your preferred payment method, be that in cash, online transfer, DuitNow or others.

To set suitable rates, research what others in your subject and area are charging. If you live in a higher-cost area or have extensive expertise or formal qualifications, you may justify charging more. However, if you’re just starting out, setting your rate too high could put off potential learners. 🚨

Remember to factor in:

  • Lesson preparation time
  • Travel or commute time (for in-person sessions)
  • Equipment or materials you provide
  • Administrative work required to run your tutoring business
  • Other factors specific to your subject or skills

Setting a thoughtful rate ensures you're fairly compensated while remaining competitive in your market. If you want to discover more about our payments and charges, we have a comprehensive guide that will clarify them for you.

I have had a very positive experience using Superprof as a tutor. The platform makes it easy to connect with students from different academic levels and backgrounds, including high school, college, and adult learners. Most of the students I’ve worked with are motivated, respectful, and genuinely interested in improving their skills. It provides good visibility for tutors and allows flexibility in scheduling and teaching style, whether lessons are online or in person. The messaging system works well, and students can easily find tutors that match their needs. Overall, it has been a reliable platform for tutoring and building long-term learning relationships with students. I would recommend it to tutors looking to expand their reach and to students seeking personalised academic support.

Defining Your Availability

Set your availability when you create your tutor profile. Define the days and times you’re available. For example, Monday to Friday from 6 pm - 9 pm, Saturday 10 am - 2 pm, etc., and indicate whether you provide remote, in-person, or both options.

If a student requests a time outside your listed availability, it’s up to you to approve it or suggest an alternative that works for both of you. We suggest that you manage your lessons using external tools like Google Calendar or Calendly.

Superprof Tutor Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Whether you're a traditional teacher who, over lockdowns, came to appreciate the joys of remote learning or someone with a non-academic skill who has never before taught anything virtual, you can become a tutor after just a few formalities.

You might wonder who we mean by someone with a non-academic skill.

The platform started as a way to connect educators with learners in need of a mentor. Since then, the range of subjects available has expanded to include any discipline from yoga and personal fitness to hobbies and leisure activities such as sewing, gardening and learning how to play a musical instrument.

You should really check out all the subjects available on Superprof. Fair warning, though: be prepared for amazement. Virtually any skill that can be taught, there's a subject expert.

What that means is even if Maths, English, or Science aren't your forte, but maybe Pilates, Zumba or weightlifting is, there's a subject-matter expert for you.

The profiles feature educators with extensive expertise in their field, as well as students still enrolled at university who want to earn a bit of cash to see them through their last years of formal education. The experts can also be exceptionally talented bakers and chefs, tailors and dressmakers with a significant background in their craft and artists who have found a measure of success exhibiting their artwork.

A teacher in a white sweater and black pants points to a whiteboard with words on it, smiling at students. The classroom setting is bright and engaging.

Obviously, the more experience you have and the higher your credentials, the more sought-after you will be. But you don't have to hold a PhD in art history to teach art or history. Once word gets out about the calibre of your lessons via your participants' testimonials, other learners will beat a path to your page.

When it comes to taxes, as someone who runs your own business, you should register as a sole proprietor with Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN), as you are running your tutoring business independently and are responsible for declaring any income earned. Do check with a tax agent or a staff member from the LHDN office to learn more about how to declare the income earned as a side hustle or as a freelancer.

In Malaysia, roughly 3 million workers participate in gig and freelance work2, embracing income opportunities outside traditional employment. Becoming a freelance tutor allows you to manage your own schedule, set your own rates, and build your personal brand – all while sharing your knowledge and earning independently.

Technical Requirements for Online Tutoring

When it comes to remote tutoring, a stable internet connection is essential. You can run sessions from anywhere in the world, as long as there’s a stable internet connection and a quiet, uninterrupted environment.

You can choose your preferred virtual platform. Make sure you have any necessary tools or materials ready, so your learners can have a smooth and effective session.

‎My experience has been exceptional because the platform keeps tutors and students effortlessly connected. Timely email notifications for lesson requests, helpful tools for planning lessons, and automated reminders for scheduled sessions make tutoring smooth, organised, and professional. Every session feels seamless, allowing both tutors and students to focus fully on learning.

Tips for Success on Superprof

Optimising Your Profile

To attract more learners and grow your opportunities, it’s essential to make your profile stand out. We recognise our educators with four statuses: New, Experienced, Super Tutor, and Ambassador. Higher-quality profiles are ranked higher in search results, giving you greater visibility to learners looking for a private tutor.

  • Use keywords relevant to your subject area, like English, maths, science, or virtual tutoring skills.
  • Use a formal photo: Choose a bright and clear image that looks approachable – your best smile goes a long way.
  • Write a detailed ad: Take the time to describe your teaching approach, methodology, and experience. Check your spelling and grammar to make a good impression.
  • Be responsive: Reply promptly to requests to show that you are reliable and committed.
  • Request recommendations: Highlight your past experiences by asking former students, friends, colleagues, or family for recommendations.

Building a Positive Reputation

Always maintain professionalism, be punctual, and show that you care about your learners during each lesson. After sessions, do not hesitate to ask them to leave a review via the “Evaluate” button in their email. Positive reviews boost your credibility and attract more learners.

If you do encounter any concerns with your students and lessons, we recommend that you send in a report to the Superprof customer care team. Contribute to the safety and trust of our platform while maintaining a quality reputation as a Superprof tutor!

Managing Lessons and Students

Being a tutor is no piece of cake, but you can make it much more manageable with the right approach. Here are practical tips to help you run successful lessons as a Superprof tutor and build strong relationships with your learners:

Clear communication from the start
Make sure you respond promptly when a potential learner reaches out. Use Superprof's built-in messaging to introduce yourself, explain your teaching approach, and clarify lesson objectives. Focus on building rapport, ask insightful questions and let them share their expectations and goals. Setting expectations early helps build trust and prevent misunderstanding.
Plan and personalise your lessons
Each student is unique, so create lesson plans that match their learning style and goals. Prepare materials in advance, structure the session for maximum engagement, and be ready to adjust if the student struggles or wants to focus on a specific topic.

Decide in advance whether you’ll give handouts or homework before the session. As a private tutor, it’s important to treat each one of your students at a higher level of care.
Engage and interact
Use examples, quizzes, visual aids, or demonstrations to make learning interactive. Be familiar with virtual platforms/tools that can help you make your learning more dynamic and collaborative. Encourage questions and discussion, as it helps learners absorb content more effectively and shows that you care about their progress.
Track student progress
Keep notes on what each student has learned, their challenges, and their preferences. This makes follow-up sessions more effective and gives insightful feedback to learners or their parents, making your work more effective over time.
Set clear payment terms
Before lessons begin, ensure your students understand your rates, how and when they should pay, and whether complimentary first sessions apply (if required based on your profile setup). As explained earlier, you can use the built-in payment or external payment methods.
Maintain professionalism
Be punctual, respectful and attentive. Treat every student with care and respect. Be mindful when communicating with your learners and take into account their culture, background, or country to avoid making inappropriate remarks. A professional attitude builds reputation, earns positive reviews, and encourages word-of-mouth referrals.

Continuous Improvement

To be an effective educator, you have to spend some time discovering what your learners need from you. Take the time to ask questions and discuss goals at the start of your lessons.

Before your sessions, plan how you’ll structure them. How much of your session time will be spent on reviewing study materials, and how much will you dedicate to new knowledge? Does this student need academic coaching as well as assistance in their subject? Do you have it in you to deliver lessons as a tutor while taking on the role of a mentor?

Ultimately, how well you work with your learners is your formula for success. They will leave a rating and, hopefully, a testimonial of your teaching style and knowledge level; their positive review will, in turn, bring you more learners who need your particular brand of teaching.

That's how Superprof works: connecting learners with independent educators, providing a space to showcase their skills, build their reputation, and share their knowledge.

If you need more tips, watch this video for inspiration:

Conclusion

Becoming a tutor on Superprof can be simple, flexible, and rewarding. By creating a detailed profile, you can share your expertise, decide your own rates, and choose when and how to teach, whether virtual or in person.

Learners can easily find you without you actively promoting your work based on your subject, location, and reviews, giving access to a global pool of learners.

With the support of the customer care team, you’ll never be alone in this journey. If you need to boost your profile visibility and grow your business, optional features, like the Pro Club, can help you with that.

Whether you’re teaching academic subjects like English, maths, or science, or sharing skills in music, languages, fitness, or skills advancement, you can turn your knowledge into a source of income.
