If you currently have a social media account, there is a high chance that you might have bought a product or a service after viewing a post or a short video, including yours truly (ahem).
Have you ever wondered why do we tend to act that way?
Well, one could argue that the advertisement possesses great persuasion elements and it addresses our pain points accurately. But more than that, we are certainly drawn to the direct pleasures and promises that we can enjoy once we purchase the item/service. It could either help us to feel better, look better and live a better life.
Actually, it's not really a psychological game, but it's just a review of the BENEFITS that you can gain. That takes us to the next step.
You see, it's always the HOWs that justify our WHYs.
So, if you are now at a crossroads and deciding if you should register to sit for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET), you are absolutely at the right place.
In this article, we will take you through the significance of taking this test and explore the five great benefits of sitting for the test.
Benefit 1: Measure English Language Ability Comprehensively
Let's take a look at the first benefit of sitting for MUET.
You will be tested in terms of four language components: listening, reading, speaking and writing respectively.
The written assessments for the Listening, Reading and Writing components will be conducted in a day whereas the Speaking component test will be conducted separately.
According to the latest MUET marking scheme, you will be graded according to nine bands:
- Band 1.0
- Band 2.0
- Band 2.5
- Band 3.0
- Band 3.5
- Band 4.0
- Band 4.5
- Band 5.0
- Band 5+
It is important to note that each language component holds 90 marks, which leads to 360 marks being the full aggregated score for MUET. Each component evaluates candidates' abilities specifically.
Listening
Evaluate the candidate's ability to recognize the main idea, make connections between the phrases, predict outcomes, identify the tone of the speaker depending on the settings, summarise the whole conversation and many more.
Reading
Evaluate the candidate's ability to make sense of each word and phrase through effective skimming and scanning (comprehension level), analyse and evaluate main ideas and supporting ideas, make a conclusion based on the given text.

Speaking
Evaluate the candidate's ability to state their opinions, support their opinions based on facts and examples, express agreement and disagreement systematically for the individual speaking task.
They will also be graded in terms of how they persuade their peers and how they manage a discussion (back-and-forth conversation until they reach a conclusion for the group speaking task).
Writing
Evaluate candidates' ability to come out with an accurate analysis of non-linear materials (graphs, diagrams, pie charts etc), essay planning, idea development and overall grammar for the first writing task.
For the second writing task, it evaluates candidates' ability to have a systematic writing structure and clear understanding of the essay formats.
Once you have mastered the tips to score for each MUET component, you'll be more confident to sit for the test.
Benefit 2: Recognised & Accepted In Local University Admission
The next benefit of sitting for MUET is it is an official English language prerequisite for public universities and local colleges in Malaysia.
That's why it is not a surprise that most MUET candidates are pre-university students such as Form Six students, matriculation students or even aspiring Diploma students.
Having a MUET certificate not only serves as a guideline and benchmark of your English proficiency but it is also listed as an important entry requirement for most undergraduate programmes.
For instance, if you are interested to pursue a law degree at the University of Malaya, you need to have at least a band 4 for your MUET.
Candidates who do not achieve the stated MUET bands will either need to retake the papers or take additional English lessons once they have enrolled for the programme.
You might want to explore the prospect of hiring a MUET tutor to guide you through all your papers so that you can apply for your desired university degree.
Benefit 3: Most Affordable English Language Proficiency Test in Malaysia
As you are gathering the details on MUET, you might also come across other English language proficiency tests that you can take in Malaysia such as the International English Language System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
