Mastering structured & essay questions in SPM Sejarah Paper 2

Take note that similarly to Paper 1, questions can also be asked based on a diagram, a map or a table. So make sure you are familiar with various illustrations of historical events or locations that you have studied in your Form 4 and Form 5 textbooks.

It is important to know your latest SPM Sejarah Format, so here is the breakdown of sections in SPM Sejarah Paper 2:

Bahagian A

Students have to answer all 4 structured questions [40m]

Out of the 4 sets of questions, 2 sets of questions will be taken from the Form 4 syllabus (10 chapters) and another 2 sets of questions will be taken from the Form 5 Sejarah syllabus (10 chapters). So this means that you have to be well versed in every chapter.

Each structured question in Bahagian A holds 10m and is normally divided into three or four sub-questions. You can refer below to get an idea of how the questions will be divided with various mark allocations.

1(a) Nyatakan punca-punca ..... [2m]
1(b) Mengapakah punca itu.... [4m]
1(c) Berikan pendapat anda berdasarkan....[4m]

2(a) Jelaskan maksud........ [2m]
2(b) Jelaskan maksud........[2m]
2(c) Nyatakan 2 perkara......[2m]
2(d) Mengapakah perkara......[4m]

Bahagian B

Students need to answer 3 out of 5 essay questions [60m]

Each essay question in Bahagian B holds 20m and is normally divided into three sections.

Out of the 5 essay questions, there is a mixture of either three questions from the Form 4 syllabus vs two questions from the Form 5 syllabus, or the other way round. Given that you have a choice to answer 3 essays, it is best to choose the ones that you are most confident with.

Here is a way on how you can be tested on the essay component in SPM Sejarah Paper 2:

1(a) Berdasarkan peta tersebut, jelaskan.............. [4m]
1(b) Bagaimanakah Malaysia berperanan membantu........... [8m]
1(c) Berikan penjelasan anda berdasarpan pernyataan tersebut....... [8m]

Common mistakes made by students in SPM Sejarah Paper 2

At times, the key to scoring well in examinations is actually minimizing the act of making errors. We hope that these will serve as a reminder to all students to not make the following mistakes when answering the ACTUAL SPM Sejarah Paper 2:

a) Writing your answers in point form
Please, please remember to use complete, simple and grammatically correct sentences when answering both, Bahagian A and Bahagian B.  Begin your paragraph by copying what is asked in a sentence and make sure your full answer is in a paragraph and your FAKTAs (F) are separated with penanda wacana (discourse markers) such as Selain itu and Berikutnya.

This is especially important for questions with keywords like NYATAKAN, JELASKAN, MENGAPAKAH, BAGAIMANAKAH with high mark allocation in the ESSAY component in Bahagian B.

Sample question: Nyatakan kandungan dalam Persekutuan X [5m]
Suggested answer:  Kandungan dalam Persekutuan X ialah.............. [F1]. Selain itu............. [F2] Seterusnya..........[F3] Selain itu......[F4]....... Berikutnya,.........[F5]

b) Ignoring the mark allocation and the answering lines
You will notice that Bahagian A consists of short, structured questions and for instance, if the mark allocation is only 2m and 2 answering lines are provided, then you do not have to answer elaborately. You can just state the direct answer.  Use the mark allocation as the guideline to plan your points in terms of facts, elaboration and even examples.

Sample question: Nyatakan pihak yang terlibat dalam perundingan X [2m]
(i)......................
(ii).....................

c) Spending too much time on one essay question
Remember that you only have 2 hours and 30 minutes for Paper 2. It is ideal to only spend a maximum of 30 minutes per essay question. One recommended tip is to scan through the essay questions as soon as you receive the paper and pick the 3 essays that you are most confident with and draft your points. You can draft your content in bullet points first as soon as you begin while your memory is fresh, so that you will not panic later.

Once you have completed the drafts for all your essays, you can then pick up your speed by writing smoothly and accurately in complete paragraphs later.

Useful revision tips for your Paper 2 in SPM Sejarah

a) Organize your notes
It is best to separate your notes based on your Form 4 and Form 5 syllabus. Instead of writing long paragraphs, opt for bullet points, tables, diagrams and even mind maps to simplify your notes. Make your notes as interactive as possible. You can even include some pictures, illustrations or even some of your previous mistakes/misconceptions about a particular topic as a reminder.

Another way to organize your notes is through themes. For instance, the themes that are commonly found in the Sejarah syllabus are politics, economy, tradition and social development of the country. Similarly, under tradition, you can include the first chapter of your Form 4 syllabus, which is Warisan Bangsan Negara. This will help you to associate the theme with the relevant points as soon as possible when revising the subject later.

b) Set a schedule for regular revision
Granted that we now spend most of our time at home, it is EASIER to be distracted with other matters. To some of us, it is a daily battle to retain our attention span. As a student, it is best to allocate a fixed time every day or every two days for a particular subject.

Planning your revision schedule sets you on the right focus and right attitude to have a productive studying session, and it applies to all kinds of subjects. When you are more mindful of how you spend your time, you are more likely to stay positive and create goals to achieve your targeted results.

c) Practice with past year papers and model exercises

Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice. – Anton Chekhov

This is a great quote to remind us that the measure of an effective revision is best seen when we see how effectively we can apply what we have studied and reviewed. The best way to practice all that you have remembered and memorized is through past year papers and model exercises!

There is certainly no shortcut to succeed in your actual Sejarah paper without actually attempting actual SPM Sejarah papers. It helps you to identify similar questioning patterns and analyze the frequency of certain topics that are asked and most importantly, the marking rubric for every section in BOTH PAPER 1 AND PAPER 2 which will determine the ultimate grade of your SPM Sejarah paper.

d) Teach a friend/engage in study groups
If you are someone who dreads studying alone or has the tendency to be easily distracted, this is a good alternative that you can consider to not only enhance your memory but also to really test your ability. When you offer to teach a friend, you have to first engage and understand the topic beforehand.

If you are in a vibrant study group, each member can take turns studying and discussing various chapters so that everyone can learn more at a faster pace. This is a fun method to learn from each other's mistakes and benefit from a more lively and relaxing atmosphere.
