Studying Biology is not just for those who aspire to be doctors, it is a subject that has the ability to appeal to the masses. Yet, despite offering fascinating and, at times, mind-blowing content to learn and explore, many do not realise how many different career paths Biology can open up for them.

Referred to as the 'science of life', Biology is a science that explores all living things, including humans, animals and plants. As such, a biologist does not necessarily have to specialise in the human body and its many ailments.

Thus, if that is what interests you, then you can apply for your medical degree in Malaysia in this subject by studying the following subjects for SPM or equivalent (IGCSE or O-Levels) based on the Malaysian Medical Council’s (MMC) requirements to enrol into a medical degree:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics or Additional Mathematics

Meanwhile for STPM or A-Levels, the required subjects would be:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics or Mathematics

However, just studying these subjects in school is not enough to secure you a medical degree. You must still at least achieve a credit grade in the respective examinations for you to be able to continue your MBBS (medical degree) journey.

As mentioned, Biology does not necessarily mean the study of the human body, it can also relate to all other living organisms on our planet. Therefore, if you are particularly keen on nature, gardening and learning how things grow in and above ground, then Biology can help to answer many of your questions and theories.

Furthermore, Biology focuses on animal species, teaching pupils how they evolved, dividing them into categories, detailing how the make-up of their cells distinguishes them as these types of organisms and also explains how they feed. Thus, if you are an animal lover, you might be keen to learn deeper about them.

Biology is an interesting subject as you can learn and understand the world around us on a more comprehensive level. It is always more fun to learn something that is highly relatable to our daily lives. But, that is not the only reason one should choose to learn Biology.

Not only can it educate you on the environment, it might even have the power to make you think differently about your surroundings and appreciate how fascinating life is.

10 Reasons Why You Should Learn Biology

Being an interesting subject, there are many reasons as to why you should get into studying Biology. Not only it is a fundamental subject you need to study to continue onto your medical journey or other career paths such as a biologist, biotechnologist including pharmacologist, but it is also:

  • A great way to take advantage of hands-on learning. Biology is a fantastic choice for those who like to get involved in practical lessons, as they can benefit from some great hands-on learning. In Malaysian high schools, sitters of the SPM examination, it is compulsory for students to learn about the anatomy of animals. This requires them to perform surgery on either a frog or a mouse, which is a great practice for those who are looking forward to venture onto a career as a surgeon in the future.
  • Learn the latest research methods. Science is constantly evolving each day with new research methods and new developments. While researchers can incorporate concepts learned from the past into their research, they also focus on the future. Continually influenced by innovation, technology and evolution, subjects like Biology are consequently led by these driving factors and educational courses strive to keep young scientists up to date on all of the traditional and modern research methods and techniques available to them. During your Biology lessons, you can benefit from learning about these approaches in detail, with the opportunity at times to carry out your own investigations using these advanced protocols.
  • You can use its principles to answer big questions. People often think about science as being all facts and figures, yet it is these evidence-based subjects that help us to question all else in this world. By understanding facts surrounding what is physically and anatomically possible, budding scientists can apply these principles again and again as they begin to question things that intrigue them. For example, if an ‘afterlife’ truly exists, whether the Big Bang Theory could ever be a reliable concept, or if the story of Adam and Eve could be biologically possible.
  • Get a clearer career path. Biology is a subject that offers an array of career paths such as getting involved with a career in Medicine (alongside other Science-based subjects) as well as jobs in the educational field such as a teacher or a tertiary education lecturer. But while Biology is fundamental to those seeking a career in the teaching or healthcare sectors, it also offers numerous other routes. As you can see, a wide range of employers recruit those with qualifications in Biology.

  • Discover living concepts. We all know how to stay alive, because it is instinctive to us. However, Biology explains in detail the basic events that keep all living organisms alive and thriving on our planet. For example, it teaches us how to plant food that can later be consumed in order to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet, it clarifies why we must keep our bodies hydrated and it explains what humans need to maintain their physicality and sleep comfortably.
  • Learn more deeply about the human body. As humans, it is always more interesting to learn more about ourselves. In addition to learning how to stay alive in general, it is the responsibility of a biologist to find out the other factors in regards to the change in cells in our bodies, like diseases or illnesses, and how they can be treated. Pupils of Biology will also learn about complex disorders that may even be fatal, alongside learning about drugs, including prescription drugs and antibiotics, and how they can affect the human body; both good and bad.
  • Explore the food chain in the ecosystem. Biological interactions explain the effects that one organism has on another living thing. In the natural world, all organisms interact with the environment and each other in order to survive. Biology teaches about the interdependency between animal and plant species in particular, and the energy supply required to feed growth and cell division. Lessons will help pupils to identify which species are producers and which are consumers, and lay out the interconnecting food chains in an ecosystem.
  • Better understanding of the environment. With Malaysia’s unpredictable weather, it would be easier to comprehend why it is so when there is knowledge of it. Students of Biology will not only learn about human and animal anatomy alongside other related topics such as medical and zoology, but they will also learn how temperature, carbon dioxide levels and light affect photosynthesis. Many fascinating practical lessons emerge from the study of this topic, so you can look forward to getting stuck into your biological control classes!
  • You will receive accreditation. Those who study with a biology teacher in a high level, for instance a degree-level, will receive accreditation for their qualifications and expertise. Science graduates are awarded with a B.Sc., or Bachelor of Science, which can then lead to a M.Sc., or Master of Science for post-graduates. A qualification from a good university will indicate that you have a good understanding of the critical fields of this science.
  • It is fundamental to society. Much of what we know about our race, animals and plants has come from scientific research. As such, scientists are very important to our society. Biology is particularly useful to human society because it teaches us how life is created, how it works and how it responds to external factors like the environment, thus explaining how to prolong our lives.

“Our world is built on biology and once we begin to understand it, it then becomes a technology.” —Ryan Bethencourt, American scientist, entrepreneur, and biohacker best known for his work as co-founder and CEO of Wild Earth.

Nevertheless, as all subjects go, it is best to pursue the studying of a new subject with a credible tutor who will not only be able to pique your interest in the subject even further but also be able to increase your progress and tutor you to the best of their extent. Which brings us to the next question…

How To Find A Biology Tutor?

Whether or not you struggle to keep up with the complex principles contained within Biology topics, a tutor can help you to significantly improve your understanding of the concepts and thus get you a much higher grade than you otherwise would have achieved.

That said, where do you find a tutor who is not only qualified and knowledgeable, but who is familiar with your course structure and the examinations that you are ultimately working towards?

First of all, you should know that your neighbour, with his GPA of 3.9, may be able to help you out with simple tasks like homework; but only a professional tutor can really move your learning along.

As such, you should be looking for somebody who has a proven record as a tutor in this subject. In many cases, tutors are past or existing teachers with knowledge of the subject as well as the syllabus being taught, which is why your school or college may be a good place to start your search.

Consult your Science teacher to see if they know of any biology private tutors who could help you during your course, or ask around among your peers and their parents, as a recommendation is always a great place to begin.

Asking somebody you know to be your tutor is not necessarily a bad thing, however you should be certain they are suitably qualified. Not only an uninspiring or under-qualified individual can cost you your good grade, they could wind up costing you lots of money that would be better spent elsewhere!

If you have no recommendations and decide to turn to the Internet in search for Biology tutors, then make sure that you only browse genuine websites of candidates with the necessary skills. Our site, Superprof, features a long list of educated tutors covering a wide range of subjects, including Biology and its different subcategories (Marine Biology, Zoology and Ecology are just some examples).

How To Choose The Right Biology Teacher?

As suggested above, one of the main things to remember is that you should always make sure you know your tutor’s educational background. For instance, if you know or find a tutor who specialises in Chemistry, he/she most probably doesn’t have the precise skills and knowledge required to effectively tutor you to a successful grade in Biology.

References are a very good way of differentiating the services available. Most experienced tutors will have taught enough pupils to be able to provide some feedback on their tutoring approach.

If you found your tutor by word of mouth, be sure to ask questions to the person who referred them and find out if they have a website or profile you can look at online. If, however, you have come across what appears to be the perfect tutor online then read their reviews and don’t be afraid to contact them to ask them some questions before you enter any agreements.

It is also a good idea to interview your chosen candidate to make sure that they are the fit for you and your studies.

Remember that to keep the momentum going, you should ideally be having at least a two-hour session once a week (or perhaps just an hour if you are under 14 and not studying towards a recognised, mainstream qualification), so if your preferred tutor can only fit in one or two short classes in a month, then consider looking for someone who can accommodate your needs. With tutoring being a relatively short-term process, you should be seeking maximum impact to ensure long-term gain.

Finally, it is really important to make sure you have a rapport with your tutor, as nothing can be worse than dreading your next appointment. This is why a personal recommendation or meeting with the tutor in person can have a positive impact on your attitude towards tuition.

How Much Do Biology Tutors Cost?

Despite what you might think, tuition does not have to cost an arm and a leg. This is particularly good news if your parents or guardians are unable to support you financially or if you make the decision to pay for additional classes yourself.

Privately hired tutors can cost RM20 per hour, however if you decide to consult an agency that specialises in hiring tutors, you can expect to pay anything upward from RM25, with some very qualified members costing as much as RM75 an hour depending on the level you are studying at, be it the IGCSE, STPM or PT3.

What Makes A Worthy Biology Tutor?

Believe it or not, anyone can teach a student the basics of a certain subject. However, it takes a truly knowledgeable tutor to be able to teach a pupil and have them progress forward in their studies. If a student does not improve in their learning, it may be that the tutor may not be as qualified as expected. Hence, it is important that parents and students alike who are looking for a credible Biology tutor look out for the qualities:

  • Academically verified and experienced. A good tutor must hold accreditation for their knowledge alongside having ample experience. An experienced tutor will have the skills to teach effectively in order to allow their students to easily comprehend the lesson delivered.
  • Able to teach regardless of students’ capabilities. As each student will have different paces in studying, a good tutor will ensure that his/her pupils  are able to absorb the lesson easily. For students who progress slower and may ask basic questions, the tutor must know how to use a simpler method of tutoring by going through each topic in detail at a pace that is acceptable to the student; while for students who are quicker in their studying momentum, tutors can encourage independent learning.
  • Having research skills. As a tutor of Biology, it is important that the teacher has good researching skills as the fundamentals of Biology revolves around constant research. As Biology will also have data and statistics instilled in it, it is important that teachers are able to determine laboratory field studies data whilst having the ability to explain the meaning of the data to the students.
  • Dedication to teaching. A teacher who is enthusiastic to teaching will ensure that his/her students will enjoy every lesson and that they will be able to absorb what is being taught without complication. There is nothing better than a teacher who enjoys teaching as these tutors will no doubt go the extra mile to make sure their students are progressing well in their studies.
  • Prioritises practicing engagement. A good rapport between a student and a teacher can be built from constant engagement between the two parties. Once a teacher gains a student’s trust, the teaching process is so much easier as an interested student will ensure to retain as much information as possible, as he/she will want to achieve his/her best in regards to the tutor’s hard work.

Now, your interest to learn Biology may have piqued and you may now be considering hiring a Biology teacher of your own. However, you may be worried that there might not be any tutors who are good enough to help you progress in the subject. Well, worry not, as you are on the right website to search for a tutor who is worthwhile!

Biology is now bigger than physics, as measured by the size of budgets, by the size of the workforce, or by the output of major discoveries; and biology is likely to remain the biggest part of science through the twenty-first century. —Freeman Dyson, English-American theoretical and mathematical physicist.
