What Will You Be Tested In  SPM Physics Paper 1 [4531/1]?

For the first paper of SPM Physics, there are altogether 40 multiple-choice questions. You are required to answer all questions. Every question is followed by either three or four options and candidates are required to choose the best options. The mark allocated is 40m and the duration of this paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

SPM Physics Paper 1 primarily focuses on the evaluation of components such as remembering, understanding, applying and analysing among students, especially on what they have learnt from the Form 4 and Form 5 Physics syllabus. The questions may also be asked in the form of diagrams, illustrations and graphs.

What Will You Be Tested In SPM Physics Paper 2 [4531/2]?

Let's take a look at the next paper. There are 3 sections [ Section A, Section B and Section C] in SPM Physics Paper 2. The total mark for this paper is 100m and the duration of this paper is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

For Section A:

There are 8 questions and it is compulsory to answer all of them. The full mark for this section is 60m. You can refer to the table below to look at the breakdown of marks according to the questions.

Section A Questions Full Marks

Total 60

For Section B:

There are 2 questions [Question 9 and Question 10] but you are only required to answer one question from this section. Each question consists of 20m. Students will be asked to give valid and thorough justifications for their answers. Hence, it is encouraged to show your working (calculation) and elaborate your points with examples to get the maximum marks for the section.

For Section C:

There is only 1 question for this part and it is compulsory for candidates to answer. The mark allocation is also 20m. The format of the question asked in Section C is similar to Section B where the style of questions is more inclined towards Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).

Some question examples include:

  • "Give reasons for your choice based on the diagram above"- Analysing
  • "Describe and explain the modification that needs to be done to convert this....." -Applying
  • "Calculate the reading of the weighing scale in Diagram 10"-Evaluating

What Will You Be Tested in SPM Physics Paper 3 [4531/3]?

We have discussed the written central assessment of SPM Physics.

Now, let's take a look at the practical school-based assessment of SPM Physics. There are 3 questions in total and the mark for each question is 15m.

The planning time is 5 minutes per question and the answering duration is 40 minutes per question.

Students will be given a list of apparatus and materials for their instruction of preparation for practical experiment-based questions.

Take note: Students are allowed to bring and use a scientific calculator for all 3 papers of SPM Physics.

What Should Your SPM Physics Revision Notes Consist?

Whether you decide to compile personally handwritten/typed notes or get them via a reference book, you need to ensure that they consist of the below components.

A good revision note will help you to remember and retain the right facts that will be asked in your actual SPM Physics paper, especially when it comes to a mixture of calculation, explanation and analysing questions.

a) Compilation of Form 4 and Form 5 Physics formulas, SI units and symbols

Bear in mind that this is a Physics paper, so you can expect more calculation and analytical questions as compared to other Science subjects such as Biology and Chemistry. Not every Physics formula will be listed in the formula sheet for your SPM Physics paper, that's why it's best to memorize all of them without relying on the formula sheet that is given.

For example, you can list them down in this manner:

1) Boyle's Law : P1V1 = P2V2 , in which

  • P1 = first pressure
  • P2 = second pressure
  • V1 = first volume
  • V2 = second volume

2) Newton's Law of Gravitation:  F = GMm   in which
r 2

  • F is the force
  • G is the gravitational constant
  • M and m are the masses
  • r is the distance between two bodies

b) List of clear and concise definitions of Physics concepts

Elasticity is the property of material that enables an object to return to its original shape and size after the force applied on it is removed.

Scalar quantities are physical quantities that have magnitude only.
Vector quantities are physical quantities that have both magnitude and direction.

c) Tables that summarize properties (similarities and differences), reasons and relationships of Physics concepts

Take for instance, the differences between Aneroid barometer and Fortin barometer (Chapter 2 Pressure in Physics Form 5) as shown below. This step is important as is a very common answering method that examiners prefer for essay questions [10m] in Section B and Section C of your SPM Physics Paper 2.

Aneroid barometer Fortin barometer
The value of the atmospheric pressure is
determined by the changes in the volume of
the partial-vacuum metal box.
The value of the atmospheric pressure is
determined by the changes in the height of
the mercury column.

atmospheric pressure
Smaller size and portableLarger size and not portable.
Lower accuracy, up to ±1 mm Hg.
Higher accuracy, up to ±0.1 mm Hg.

Where To Get The Best Online Learning and Revision Resources For SPM Physics?

After reviewing the latest format for your SPM Physics paper, let's proceed to be well equipped for your learning and revision. Instead of relying on solely your regular exercises at school, it's good to diversify your learning method to have a comprehensive studying experience.

Here are some resources/platforms where you can find a variety of SPM Physics learning resources.

a) Youtube channels

Learning complex Physics topics through videos can be equally effective as a face to face lesson. That's because you can pause and play it countless time and focus better when you are watching it on your own.

You'll be surprised that many current students or former SPM students who are great at explaining things and making engaging tutorial videos. Furthermore, the usage of attractive images, illustrations and animations can help you to remember and connect the points better. It's also free to access them anytime and anywhere you want.

b)  Blogs by teachers and students

If you still prefer to read, you can do an extensive search online and check out various SPM Physics past year papers on many students and teachers' blog. Some of them started compiling past year papers, state trial papers, MRSM trial papers, sample questions of the subject from the all SPM Physics syllabus. Most of them are free to download and access.

Make sure to also download the marking scheme together so that you can check your answers after completing them!
