When should I start learning drums?

While there hasn't been a unanimous decision on the perfect age to start playing drums, there have been opinions that children who learn around the ages of 6 to 7 are best prepared for learning drums as a new instrument. This is because most students at these ages will have gained the required mental focus needed to pick up a new hobby.

Certain exceptions do need to be considered, however. Rhythm and timing are among the most important elements of a drummer, and for those learning drums for beginners, a certain level of coordination skills may need to be developed before playing drums.

Still, it's fair to say that all percussionists will progress at their own pace. It is possible to also build on your rhythm and timing through drum lessons. Sure, you can prepare in advance for what you need to learn as a drummer, but it all comes down to dedication and practice at the end of the day.

Can you learn drums at any age?

Of course! Did you know that many percussionists who are still playing drums today are well over the age of 50? Tommy Lee, Chad Smith and Jonathan Moffett are all around 60 years old! If these musicians are still actively drumming, then it goes to show you can pick up the drums regardless of how much later in life you decide to pursue this passion.

Studies have shown that you can experience the benefits of learning drums at any age. Are you familiar with the health benefits of drumming for both young and old?

Learning on your own vs learning drums with a tutor

Can I learn the drums on my own?

You may be wondering whether you should try learning on your own first, before starting out with any drum tutors. This is a great question because there are indeed drummers who were able to pick up the instrument on their own, even without taking drum lessons with a professional. The advantage here is that you'll only need to worry about purchasing quality drum equipment in your area.

If you decide to learn the drums on your own, you can save up on paying any tutoring fees. While this is true, no musical pursuit is ever easy, and the drums happen to be one of those instruments that are a challenge to learn on your own. This is partially due to the fact that there are so many elements of the drum to learn about: from learning the drum pieces, to setting up the drum, to making sure it's ready to play...

... we haven't even got to methods so you can start playing the drums.

That is why one of the best choices you can make to start your drumming journey is to learn with a professional drum instructor, like a Superprof tutor. Learning drums with a tutor can provide you with several benefits, such as:

  • Introduce you to all the essential drum gear
  • Build your knowledge of all the drum parts
  • Teach you how to read drum sheet music
  • Train you with the right drumming skills and techniques
  • Answer your personal questions and concerns about the drums

You should consider these benefits of learning drums with a tutor. If you decide to learn with drum tutors from Superprof, you can have access to learning both contemporary drums and world drums, such as the Western African djun-djuns and the Spanish tambores. You can even have quality drum lessons for as low as RM21 with a Superprof tutor.

Better yet, sign up with Superprof today and get your first drum lesson for free!

Furthermore, you can take graded music exams under the Rockschool (RSL) drum music qualification.  Learning drums online is also possible if you already have a drum kit at home.

How do I prepare for drum lessons?

If you've finally decided where to take drum lessons, that's great! As a beginner drummer, we understand that there may be some further concerns about what you need to look out for when deciding on your drum tutor, or if there are certain drumming programmes you should sign up for. Take note that not all music schools provide the same learning opportunities for aspiring drummers.

Therefore, we'd like to encourage you to keep these further points in mind before signing up with any drum tutors.

Learn with the best facilities

The quality of the drum equipment you are learning drums with is vital if you want to know what good-sounding drums are supposed to be like. Look out for places that provide you with various drum styles and instruments, even those outside of drums, that can help deepen your musical knowledge. This can include facilities for technical development and ear training, too.

Gain experience with a reliable drum instructor

A reliable drum instructor is someone who has an academic background in music and is experienced in teaching drums to students. Even if you are learning drums online, a trained drum instructor should be ready to cater to your level of drumming skill and individual needs. They should also possess substantial knowledge of drum history facts that can help students deepen their knowledge of the drums.

Develop your musical ability

Finally, a good music school doesn't stop at providing drum lessons. To really get good at the drums, your drum school must provide you with access to other useful music courses, including music business skills, music production and even songwriting. These could be complimentary courses under the school or even in collaboration with other music companies.

Other than these tips, remember that you should also keep to a fixed practice schedule if you want to see improvement in your drum playing. All the best!
