Be a global communicator- Advance your career with Mandarin
Seeing is believing, so we have compiled two public figures’ journey on how they soared in their respective careers with the help of Mandarin to communicate and perform effectively.
Badminton player - Viktor Axelsen
Axelsen is certainly no stranger to most Malaysians, especially after we watched the thrilling rubber game of him and fellow Malaysian, Lee Zii Jia during the All-England finals in March this year.
Apart from his badminton skills, Axelsen who hails from Denmark is also well known for his Mandarin learning passion. He reportedly started learning Mandarin from a Mandarin teacher in 2014 and even signed up for Mandarin online conversational lessons via Skype. He is now able to hold conversations and even answer fully in Mandarin during interviews by the Chinese press.
Axelsen mentioned that he was motivated to learn Mandarin because many badminton competitions were held in China and he also wanted to communicate more freely with his fellow Mandarin-speaking competitors like Lin Dan and our very own Datuk Lee Chong Wei!
He added that his fluency in Mandarin has helped him to improve as he could learn new skills directly from his Chinese coach and even secure international sponsorships as a player. As seen on his Instagram, he is still actively practising Mandarin and continues to engage with his Chinese speaking fans during the lockdown.
Singer - Shila Amzah
Famed for becoming the first runner up for Malaysia’s singing competition, One in A Million, Shila rose to international stardom when she decided to enter the Chinese music industry in 2012.
Her breakthrough came after winning the Asian Wave in Shanghai and she continued to make headlines when she joined another singing contest- I Am A Singer Season 2. Her singing clips especially her rendition of Forever Love, originally sung by Wang Lee Hom has garnered over 3.2 million views on Youtube.
Shila previously revealed that she did not speak a word of Mandarin before she started working in China. It was initially challenging to communicate with her fans and staffs but as she worked in China and Hong Kong over the years, she started to take Mandarin lessons to master the language. This has helped her to convey her emotions and song delivery in Mandarin more effectively.
Presently, she is the first and only Malay singer to make a name in the Mandopop market. She also successfully launched her Mandarin album in which she self-penned some of them through collaborations with other Mandarin artists. Fondly known as 茜拉 by her Chinese speaking fans, Shila has a massive fanbase on Weibo, having more than 2.3 million followers.
Identifying your motivation to learn Mandarin and act upon it
Learning Mandarin as a second or third language is surely not an easy feat, especially with the pinyin, characters recognition and cultural understanding. However, like Axelsen and Shila it is important to know why you want to learn Mandarin in the first place and take practical actions to master it.
If you are working in a multinational company and you are constantly in contact with Chinese speaking clients and employers in business settings, you can focus more on improving your vocabularies and listening skill to be more confident during meetings.
You could also be a student who wants to work for an international organization like United Nations (UN) in the future. Given that Mandarin is one of the official languages of the UN, you might want to focus more on overall spoken and written language comprehension or even sit for a language proficiency test.
Studying on your own could be lonely if you are a beginner and clueless on how to learn Mandarin effectively. You can start by looking for a Mandarin tutor that you can be comfortable with. It is even better to commit to a physical or online Mandarin class where you get to practice your listening, speaking, reading and even writing regularly.
