Is There An Ideal Revision Route For Your SPM Economics Subject?

As you have watched the Youtube tutorial videos and gained a strong foundation in terms of the core topics, it's now time to plan a systematic revision route to ace this subject.

Here are three important steps to have an effective and productive learning process.

Step 1: Start with organising your notes

Without an organised compilation of notes/point of reference, you will feel as if you are walking in circles. There's no clear direction and guidelines to start and progress.

You can start by organising your notes according to chapters, topics and even come up with concept maps, summaries, bullet points to write down all the information that you need to memorise. You can choose to write them in notebooks or print them out and compile them in a separate file.

Step 2: Discover the most effective way to memorise

Remember that everyone has different ways of remembering and retaining information. Some of us need to write everything down a few rounds while some has "photogenic memory" and relies a lot on visual stimulation.

Take some time to explore which way works best for you.

Step 3: Listen, listen and listen

Whether it is your regular Economics lessons in schools,  online Youtube lessons or even your Economics private tutoring, research has shown that active listening can help to enhance your memory of that particular information.

The better you focus on listening the information and repeat the action, your brain will gradually associate the information according to the important features and help you to immediately identify them the next time you come across them.

For example, if you have been continuously listening to a tutorial video on Peranan Kerajaan Dalam Ekonomi, you'll naturally remember the content of the video whenever you see related keywords the next round. T

This will help you tremendously in your actual SPM Economics Paper 1 and Paper 2!

Why Should You Do Lots Of Past Year Papers?

Once you have memorised all the important concepts, you should put it to test by attempting as many past year papers as possible.

Here are three main reasons.

Reason 1: Familiarise yourself with the actual difficulty level for the exam

Two of man's greatest fears are the fear of unknown and failure.

Doing past year papers give you many opportunities to try and anticipate without experiencing true failure.

By then, you could already gauge the true difficulty of the whole paper and know how to face the situation and come out with the best solution.

Reason 2: Build confidence to complete the paper within the given time (under pressure)

Most of the time, candidates get nervous because of lack of practice.

When you practice with past year papers, you need to make sure you follow the given time to complete them. Treat them like an actual examination. The more you practice, the faster you'll get in time. That way, you'll have sufficient time to even double-check your answers with ease.

Important note: For Paper 1, the duration is 1 hour and 15 minutes  whereas for Paper 2, the duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Reason 3: Be well versed with the grading criteria and master the right answering techniques

After you have completed a series of past year questions, make sure you go through your answers and compare them with the given marking scheme.

Check and see if your answers are on the right track and review how the answers are structured according to the mark allocation for each question, especially when it comes to your SPM Economics Paper 2.

That way, you'll be able to master the answering techniques accordingly.

As you are reviewing the past year questions, you can also read up on the Form 5 Economics topics.

Four Criteria To Help You Pick The Right SPM Economics Reference Books For Your Revision

In between your self-independent study, you might want to check out some reference books to find comprehensive topical notes alongside topical sample questions.

We know that it's difficult to come to a decision when there are so many books to choose from.

Here are three criteria to guide you in the book selection process.

Criteria 1: Check if it follows the latest SPM Economics syllabus and updated exam format

This is the most important criteria. At times, you might be confused with the previous SPM Ekonomi Asas syllabus.

The reference books will normally highlight these information on the front cover, so be sure to double-check.

Criteria 2: Consists of engaging notes and elaborations

As you browse through the pages, take some time to skim through the content and chapters. Make sure that the notes are correctly arranged and supported with sufficient elaboration and real-life examples.

Have an overview of the latest examination format for your SPM Economics Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Criteria 3: Provide complete answers and marking scheme for all the topical and summative exercises

A good SPM Economics reference book will not be complete without complete answers to the questions after each chapter.

This will help you to have an effective revision process in the long run.
