Albert Einstein. Issac Newton.
Marie Curie. Stephen Hawking.
As a science stream student, you must have heard of these big names during your secondary school Science/Physics classes. You can even say that they have contributed to a certain degree to the emergence and increasing significance of Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) education today.
Without them, you will not know Physics concepts such as relativity, gravity, radioactivity and black holes.
It is thanks to them that you could have developed a passion and interest to pursue a career that is directly related to Physics such as engineering, research physicist, astrophysics and so on.
After SPM Physics, you may wonder what's next for you for Pre-U. We've got the answer for this. You can take this interest in Physics to the next level with STPM Physics, should you opt to study Form Six before pursuing your undergraduate studies.
Another good news is this: You don't have to take all three Sciences for your Form Six studies.
The Science stream selection for Form Six in Malaysia works in such a way that you can either choose to take Biology/Physics in addition to Chemistry, Mathematics and General Studies. So that's 4 subjects in total.
In this article, we'll enlighten you on what you can expect to learn in STPM Physics.
What To Expect When You Have Signed Up For STPM Physics In Form Six?
Even though you technically still go to a school, Form Six is as serious and formal as any other Pre-University study.
You don't even have to wear a uniform and opt for formal wear during lessons these days.
Here are 3 real experiences that you can expect while studying for STPM Physics.
Expectation 1: Solid knowledge of pre-university Physics studies
The STPM Physics syllabus is legit.
We kid you not. It has a sum of 25 chapters and it covers pretty much everything you need to know before taking your degree.
It covers comprehensive and a variety of Physics themes such as:
- Mechanics and Thermodynamics [ Semester 1]
- Electricity and Magnetism [Semester 2]
- Oscillations and Waves, Optics and Modern Physics [Semester 3]
You will also be sitting for assessments every single semester.

Expectation 2: A balanced assessment for both theory and practical elements
Obviously, you are still required to sit for written central assessments throughout your Form Six studies.
But there is also a significant increase of school-based assessments that you can benefit from. You'll have to conduct 13 Physics practical experiments, write reports based on that and also have a coursework project with your classmates.
You will also be evaluated on your report writing skills and presentation skills. It is certainly a huge shift from your SPM days.
Expectation 3: Cultivation of consistency throughout the 3 semesters
As mentioned in the first point, the STPM Physics syllabus is covered throughout the course of 3 semesters. Unlike your SPM exam, you will be graded every semester, using the pointer system (from 0 to 4.0).
The higher the pointer you get for each semester, the higher your CGPA will be for your overall STPM subject.
Your CGPA is the average of your total pointer for each semester.
Let's say you scored a pointer of 3.5 in your STPM Physics 1st sem, followed by 3.5 for your 2nd sem and 3.7 for your 3rd sem, your CGPA for your STPM Physics paper is 3.56.
Since 2012, the introduction of the STPM new semester system also enables students to resit within the semesters to improve the grades of their first test.
One piece of advice though. This advantage should not be taken for granted because resitting for another semester implies that you have to revise extra topics while preparing for the current semester.

Why Is Past Year Papers So Important For Your STPM Physics Revision?
If there are two things SPM taught us, it's these.
Practice makes perfect.
Experience is the best teacher.
The best way to combine these two elements? Past year papers.
Here are 3 reasons why past year papers are so crucial when you're preparing for your STPM Physics exam.
a) Familiarize yourself with the actual exam format and marking scheme
By going through various past year papers, you will know what to anticipate for each section and what are the most frequently asked questions.
You'll also develop a keen eye for recurring keywords (Define, State, Explain) when you are reading the questions and answering them.
b) Build confidence through constant practice
Doing past year papers is extremely helpful to "train" yourself to answer all of the questions within the given time frame. The key is to have enough time to not only complete your answers but also to check them before you submit your answer sheets.
This can be done through several rounds of practising with actual past year papers because it matches the exact level of difficulty for the questions.
c) An objective way to evaluate your progress
Be sure to get all your past year papers graded after you've completed them. It's important to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie and what can be done to improve for the next round.
If you noticed that you're most likely to get a calculation question wrong, it's probably a sign to increase your exercises on them and be more careful when you're putting the figures into the formulas on paper.
Don't be discouraged by your mistakes but use them to propel you to progress and succeed.
“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”Albert Einstein
Where To Get A Variety Of STPM Physics Past Year Papers?
Let's get down to business. It's time to start looking for STPM Physics past year papers to kickstart your learning journey.
You can find them via these sources.
Physical/ Online bookstores
Invest in a bookstore membership to enjoy great deals on reference and academic books as a student!
Local bookstores such as Popular and MPH offer great discounts on past year papers collection for STPM subjects.
You can also get a whole collection of STPM Physics past year questions for less than RM30 on online bookstores at Shopee/ Lazada. They also include analysis and full answers for the collection.
It's a perfect studying tool if you prefer a hardcopy workbook to get your revision done.
There are many STPM Physics learning blogs that have been set up by Physics teachers and also former STPM students. Occasionally, you'll also get sneak peak's of their personalised Physics notes and exam tips based on their experiences.
Just do a simple Google on "STPM Physics" and you can find many former students sharing their notes from semester 1 to 3, past year papers and experiences.
If you're active on social media, be sure to check out Facebook Groups that are set up for STPM students. You'll find many students and Physics teachers interacting in the group while sharing past year papers via Google drives or even emails. Most of them are FOC, so don't miss this opportunity!
How Can Online Tutoring Help You To Thrive For STPM Physics?
Even though most of the schools are already open, many students still prefer to have extra tutoring lessons after schooling hours.
Parents and students would opt for a more personalised and less crowded tutoring environment these days.
It's no surprise that online tutoring is on the rise.
As a student/parent, we highly recommend you to connect with amazing and experienced Physics tutors around Malaysia via Superprof.
Superprof is an educational platform that enables you to learn passionately with confidence, especially through online tutoring.
