Are there any changes in the Sains Sukan Format for STPM 2024?

The current Sains Sukan format used in your STPM examinations follows the official changes set by MPM beginning in 2012 and the format has adhered to the same marking scheme since that year. Nonetheless, Form 6 students should remain vigilant and look out for official MPM announcements should there be any changes to the STPM Sport Science syllabus.

Does this mean similar questions will pop up in the STPM Sport Science papers?

In Kertas 1 of STPM Sports Science for the years 2013, 2014 and 2019, physical fitness (kecergasan fizikal) appeared in all these papers. Students who sat for the 2013 and 2014 STPM Sports Science papers were tested on their knowledge of physical fitness in Question 1 (STPM 2013) and Question 2 (STPM 2014) of Kertas 1. These were structured questions.

In STPM 2019, the topic of physical fitness was again tested in Question 4 of Kertas 1, which was an essay question worth 15 marks.

What is the key takeaway here?

You'll likely see recurring themes come up in Kertas 1, Kertas 2 and Kertas 3 (which we will get into detail in a little bit) of your STPM Sport Science syllabus since you will only be tested on the topics you have learned for the specific term. So you should understand and revise the topics for each term regularly!

For Kertas 4 however, you will get a headstart on which topics you will be assessed on when your subject teacher reveals the 13 practical assessments for STPM Sports Science in Term 1.

Wait, what about Kertas 5 then?

There are numerous resources for mastering STPM Sports Science 2024.

Now, let's get into the STPM Sains Sukan format and marking scheme for all the papers.

What are the key marking criteria for STPM Sport Science papers?

First, let's look at the first three papers stated in your STPM Sports Science textbook.

Kertas 1 STPM Sports Science

For this written exam, you will tested on the knowledge of topics in Term 1, including sports sociology, sports management, leisure and recreation, and nutrition in sports. The STPM Sains Sukan format for Kertas 1 looks like this:

  • Section A (Structured Questions): Answer all 4 questions provided in the paper. Each question is worth 2 to 4 marks.
  • Section B (Essay): Answer only 2 out of 3 questions. You can score a maximum of 15 marks per question.

Total marks for Kertas 1 = 60 marks (25% weightage to final grade)

Kertas 2 STPM Sports Science

This written exam tests your knowledge of topics in Term 2, which include anatomy and physiology, physical fitness and well-being. Here is the STPM Sains Sukan format for Kertas 2:

  • Section A (Structured Questions): Answer all 4 questions provided in the paper. Each question is worth 2 to 4 marks.
  • Section B (Essay): Answer only 2 out of 3 questions. Obtain a maximum score of 15 marks per question.

Let's go

What are the general guidelines for answering STPM Sports Science questions?

These three papers will be 1 hour 30 minutes. Answers provided should be straightforward as examiners will look for key points when assigning marks, and avoid lengthy introductions or conclusions you may be tempted to include in your essay answers.

Let's take Kertas 2 of the 2015 STPM Sport Science paper as an example:

Soalan 1(a): Nyatakan empat elemen penting yang dilakukan semasa aktiviti pemanasan badan (4m).

Since the question states "nyatakan", which is common to many Section A questions in the three papers, you just need to provide a straightforward answer for any four elements that are integral to warm-up activities. Examples would be:

  • Meningkatkan suhu badan dan otot (Increase temperature of body and muscles)
  • Menyediakan badan untuk aktiviti fizikal (Prepare the body for physical activities)

Lesson: Keep it simple!

For essay questions, there are almost always questions related to formulas, calculations and procedures related to health in sports, such as the question in Section B of the same paper which asks you to calculate the target pulse rate (kadar nadi sasaran) and apply the bleep test (ujian bleep). You can find past STPM Sports Science papers through this website run by teachers and educators in STPM.

How are the STPM Sports Science practical examinations assessed?

Another way you can improve your STPM Sports Science grade is through the remaining two exam papers related to the practical applications of sports science. So there are real-life benefits to learning STPM Sports Science!

Let's see how they are different from the other three papers in the Sains Sukan format:

Kertas 4 STPM Sports Science

As mentioned earlier there are 13 practical assessments for you to complete. Nonetheless, you won't be completing all 13 in just one term as they are paced according to the topics taught in each term. These 13 exercises are different for each STPM batch, and here is what you can expect:

  • Kertas 4 practical assessments are school-based assessments that will only be carried out during Form 6 lesson hours.
  • There will be both individual and group assignments.
  • The assessments contribute an accumulated weightage score of 25% to your final STPM Sport Science grade (240 marks scaled to 60 marks = 25% weightage to final grade).

Kertas 5 STPM Sports Science

Although this is a written exam that you will sit for at the end of Term 3 in Form 6, it's less about theory and more about how you should approach real-life situations (say, how to tell which team has won in a series of hockey matches) related to sports science.

There are 4 structured questions in this Sains Sukan format paper, ranging from as little as 1 mark to 8 marks per question. Kertas 5 is 2 hours long. The questions that come out in this paper are not necessarily tied to the STPM Sport Science syllabus, as stated in the official guide for the subject.

Therefore, to use the marking scheme for Kertas 4 and Kertas 5 of STPM Sport Science to your advantage, make sure you are well-versed in the following:

  • Scoring and competition guidelines in sports
  • Sports calculations and formulas you have learned in Form 6
  • Medical and health procedures provided by professionals in sports science
  • Basic knowledge of human health and nutrition

If you've ever wanted to know what else you can do with sports science, here are some interesting careers after STPM Sport Science.

What potential challenges will you face as a Form 6 student sitting for the STPM Sports Science exam?

In general, you will get by just fine if you are clear with the updated STPM Sports Science syllabus and examination format.

Nonetheless, there may be some external factors that may affect your final grade in your STPM Sport Science subject. Since exam questions may not be fully aligned with the STPM Sports Science textbook for Kertas 4, you may be asked questions that you may not have come across before or are new to you in this written exam.

Additionally, for Terms 2 and 3 of your Form 6 studies, you should also be at a moderate level of fitness to carry out the STPM Sport Science coursework successfully. The exercises and activities related to fitness and coaching may be challenging for you if you lack the necessary stamina and energy!
