All Malaysian secondary students have to choose whether they want to continue their education through the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) or the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education).

Both of them open doors to further education. But, they are quite different in terms of subject choices and learning experiences.

If you're a student trying to decide which pathway suits you best, you’re at just the right place. In this post, you’ll learn the subject options and study resources available for both SPM and IGCSE.

Key Differences Between SPM and IGCSE

Both SPM and IGCSE are secondary education certifications, but they operate under different frameworks.

SPM is Malaysia's national qualification, set and examined by Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia (LPM), the Malaysian Examinations Board.

It follows the KSSM (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah) curriculum, which was introduced in 2021. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and practical skills alongside academics. Most SPM subjects are taught in Bahasa Melayu, but Mathematics and Sciences are offered in dual-language formats (available in both English and Malay).

IGCSE is an international qualification based on the British curriculum offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education and Pearson Edexcel. It is taught primarily in English and is recognised by universities worldwide.

The table below is a quick overview of SPM and IGCSE differences.

Subject Choices in SPM

Students taking SPM are allowed to take a maximum of 12 subjects.

But if you want to know how many subjects in SPM a student needs to receive the SPM certificate, you must take a minimum of six subjects. These include the compulsory core subjects and at least one elective.

Compulsory SPM Subjects

All SPM candidates must take six compulsory subjects that form the foundation of their SPM qualification:

  1. Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language)
  2. Bahasa Inggeris (English Language)
  3. Sejarah (History)
  4. Mathematics
  5. Science
  6. Pendidikan Islam (Islamic Studies) for Muslim students, or Moral Studies for non-Muslim students

SPM compulsory pass subjects include Bahasa Melayu and History. To be awarded the SPM certificate, you must achieve at least a Grade G (pass) in both of these subjects. Failure in either means your certificate will be withheld, regardless of your performance in other subjects.

Important Note

Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah are certificate-determining. If you fail either one, your SPM certificate will be withheld, regardless of how well you perform in other subjects. Plan your revision accordingly and don't neglect these two papers.

From 2021, the format of several SPM papers was revised under the new KSSM syllabus. For the latest information on subject specifications, you can refer to the official guidelines from Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia.1

SPM Elective Subjects

The choice of elective subjects depends on your stream. Most students take between 8 and 12 subjects in total, which consist of compulsory subjects and electives from their chosen academic stream.

Here are the main elective categories:

Pure Science Stream

Applied Science & Technology
Agriculture, Home Science, Sports Science, Civil Engineering Studies, Engineering Drawing
Arts & Humanities Stream
Principles of Accounting, Economics, Business Studies, Malay Literature, English Literature, Art & Design, Creative Multimedia
Languages
Chinese, Tamil, Arabic, Kadazandusun, Iban
Islamic Studies (for Muslim students)
Islamic Education (Pend. Al-Quran dan Al-Sunnah), Islamic Jurisprudence (Pend. Syariah Islamiah), Islamic Worldview (Tasawur Islam)
Vocational Subjects
Interior Design, Catering & Food Service, Skin Care & Hair Styling, Domestic Electrical Equipment Repair

Subject Choices in IGCSE

IGCSE gives you far greater flexibility in subject selection compared to SPM. The programme offers over 70 subjects, including 30 languages.

Schools usually recommend that students take between 7 and 10 subjects, with a minimum of 5 subjects and a maximum of 14.

There are technically no compulsory subjects in IGCSE. But most schools have made it standard practice for students to take three core subjects: English, Mathematics, and Science.

Core Curriculum

IGCSE offers two levels of study in most subjects: core and extended curricula.

The Core curriculum is for students of average ability. It covers essential content targeted at grades C to G.

This curriculum provides you with a good understanding of the subject without the greater depth required for higher achievement. It's best for students who are working towards C-grade passes and want a more accessible pathway.

Extended Curriculum

The Extended curriculum is for more academically advanced students. It includes the entire Core curriculum plus additional topics and greater depth.

Importantly, you don't need to take the same curriculum level for all subjects you choose. A student of moderate ability can choose Extended papers in subjects they excel at while taking Core papers in others.

SPM vs IGCSE: Which One Is the Better Choice?

Both SPM and IGCSE have different pros and cons. You can make a decision based on the following factors:

  • Cost considerations. SPM is more affordable. Government school students pay no tuition fees, and the only cost they bear is that of textbooks or study resources. IGCSE is offered at international schools; it can cost between RM20,000 and RM100,000 annually, depending on the number of subjects you take.

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

Benjamin Franklin
  • Subject flexibility. IGCSE has more subjects to offer. If you want to pursue niche subjects like Drama, Environmental Management, or Design & Technology, it's best to go for IGCSE.
  • Entry to further education. Your study pathways after SPM include STPM (Malaysian Higher School Certificate), matriculation programmes, diplomas, and entry to Malaysian universities. IGCSE, by contrast, is recognised globally and highly valued by international universities. IGCSE results directly lead you to AS and A Levels.
  • Language of instruction. SPM is taught in Bahasa Melayu, though some subjects offer dual-language options. IGCSE is taught in English. It may be better if you plan to go abroad.
