A lot of students may think that since PT3 Science is a school-based lower secondary assessment, they don't have to really aim for a high grade. Isn't it better to focus later since they will be studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics for SPM?

We hate to say this, but getting a Grade C in PT3 Science is not enough to fully secure you a place to study Science stream subjects. Certain schools even have a fixed quota for Science stream classes for upper secondary students.

You should never underestimate the significance of PT3 Science for these two main reasons.

Why Is It Important To Have A Strong Foundation in Science For PT3 level?

Exposes you to core knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Before going deep into the three branches of Science subjects, you'll be taught the general science topics. In the next paragraph, you will see the topics that you will learn throughout your Form 1 to Form 3 studies.

For instance, you will learn about the elements of the periodic table (Chemistry), you will explore various living cells (Biology), and you will study the concept of energy and power (Physics).

All of them are equally important and in certain ways, connected to one another. You have to master all of them to have a smooth transition when you're entering Form Four later.

Enhances interest and ability in STEM-related fields in the future

It's never too early to talk about ambitions. It's better to be equipped with this knowledge earlier than to regret it later in the future.

When you are actively engaging in learning Science from PT3 level, SPM level, it enables you to develop a systematic and comprehensive understanding of how to apply Science effectively in your everyday life. Given that the current emerging job trends are highly focused on the STEM industry, your mastery of this subject will eventually lead you to many job opportunities, both locally and globally.

How To Tackle Objective Questions in Section A For PT3 Science?

There are 20 multiple choice questions that you will need to answer in Section A. We often hear of tricky questions occurring in this section, but we got two useful tips to help you sail through like a pro.

a) Clearly identify the exact position/ features/process/ name of images and diagrams

There are questions that will ask you to state the answer to what is labelled in the given image/diagram. For instance, they might point an arrow to a structure in a human cell/body organs and ask you the function of the structure. They could also ask you to interpret a graph (what causes the graph to be that way, what are the effects of the process etc).

Hence, you should pay attention to visuals and images that you have come across during your Science lessons

b) Eliminate the wrong option when you're asked to choose 2 right answers

You will also see  I, II, III and IV answer options in some questions. The key is to always identify the statement that you are most confident is wrong and eliminate the options that have that statement, and then you will be left with the final two answers, in which one of them is the right one.

It is a matter of probability and accuracy.

Ways To Score Full Marks For Section B in PT3 Science

Next, let's move to the subjective sections of the paper. Section B consists of 5 questions and the marks allocation is 20m.

Here are some pointers that you can refer to while revising and answering the actual questions.

a) Master the true and false statements and match the right characteristics with the given science concepts

For Questions 1 to 4 in this section, you could also be asked to tick the right statement or underline the right answers out of the given options.

b) Provide simple and straightforward working for definition and calculation questions

Definition and calculation questions (Question 5) in this section consist of only 1m, so make sure you put in the right formula and give a short but concise answer to the question.

You can read more on the latest marking scheme of PT3 Science here.

What Type of Questions Will Usually Be Asked In Section C For PT3 Science?

You've now reached the final section of PT3 Science. There are 6 questions in this section and the mark allocated is 60m.

Here are some of the most common questions that you will encounter in Section C.

a) List the name and function of the specified illustration

Do pay attention to the beginning of the questions as they may have a short paragraph (containing keywords) to explain the diagram.

The diagrams could show a step by step process of a chemical reaction [eg: the heating of aluminium oxide and zinc oxide], results of a lab experiment [eg: metal's reaction with water] or a scientific phenomenon [radioactive radiation].

b) State two reasons for x/ differences between x and y

Be specific in your answers while relating to the diagram as they only contain 1m or 2m for these questions.

c) Explain the reason/relationship based on the above image/diagram/graph

This is where you need extra elaboration as you have to justify your answers with solid examples and facts. You may also need to show some calculations to support your points.

This is why it's important to use past year papers/sample questions when you're studying for PT3 Science.
