What can you do with a mathematics degree in Malaysia?

When we talk about having a major at university, we are speaking about the subject that will be the main focus of your degree. When you enter a degree alongside other students at the undergraduate level, most of the subjects you'll be taking will be in your major - and so, you'll graduate with a degree in that major.

It is no secret that mathematics is a popular course, given the diverse opportunities available if you decide to take it as your choice of study. By taking a major in math, you will be exposed to topics from algebra and geometry to differential equations and advanced calculus. This means you also get to build upon skills such as logical and abstract thinking, analytical ability and problem-solving.

With these skills in place, mathematics is thus popular in Malaysia not only as a choice of study but also in the working industry. These skills are valuable to employers and organisations that rely on personnel who are able to work through complex problems and come up with practical solutions for them. Many jobs that are related to maths are sought after in fields such as engineering, IT, banking, finance and more.

Although some of the highest-paying jobs are found in math-related careers, this is often true for those who have taken advanced studies in mathematics. Hence, it may be necessary for you to further your studies in maths if you'd like to get into a well-paying career. Becoming a professor or researcher, for instance, will require you to get a doctorate in maths, so you will need to set aside a few more years of studying at your university.

How long will you spend time in university studying mathematics?

Who should major in mathematics?

Students who enjoyed learning about math in school and performed well in the subject are likely to be good candidates for math majors at the university level. Another great indicator is if the student has already shown early interest in the subject by participating in math-related competitions or taking advanced courses even before completing an international foundation programme in mathematics.

When you've already spent a lot of time studying the subject or have had discourses with others who are passionate about math, you are probably ready to get into a maths degree (as long as you've fulfilled your entry requirements and language requirements first!). Nonetheless, other qualities that are not necessarily math-related will be needed for you to succeed in your math degree.

These qualities encompass the desire to keep learning and the ability to never give up, which are just as important as being good at mathematics. That's because outside of just your degree, you need to learn other electives like an English language course, plan out your study schedule, make room for revision, consult your lecturers... on top of performing well in your examinations! So, other soft skills such as time management, interpersonal skills and teamwork are crucial to your studies.

Either way, every first step into a mathematics major should begin with your interest in the subject. If you're still unsure about whether to study mathematics at the university level, it may be helpful to read up on the programme structures for universities in Malaysia to see if your interest lies in the topics being taught. Otherwise, you could explore other fields of study related to math, such as engineering, computer science, and economics.

Let's also think about the cost of studying mathematics in Malaysia.
