MUET, which is the short form for the Malaysian University English Test first came about in the year 1999. This test which was introduced to the Malaysian schooling system is taken by not only local but also foreign students who aim to start and complete their degree in Malaysia. The main reason this examination was introduced is to assess the standard and quality of a student’s English proficiency which will be essential for them to complete their degree. Since the registration for the 2024 MUET has already closed, those of you who are thinking about taking this test must sit for it in 2025.

As a brief introduction, there are three MUET sessions set up during the year. Below are some details you will need to prepare for your registration:

  • Session 1
    • Registration starts on 9th December 2024 and closes on 12th January 2025
  • Session 2
    • Registration starts on 18th April and ends on 18th May 2025
  • Session 3
    • Registration starts on 4th August and ends on 7th September 2025

You can check out the schedule in the MPM website. The MUET assessment is generally split into two different parts. The first is the speaking assessment and the other is the writing assessment. Please take note that the writing assessment is a test for all reading, writing and listening test.

Now that you have a brief idea of when the registration starts, you can prepare yourself accordingly for the assessments. In this article, we will be talking about the MUET syllabus as well as the exam format to expect in the 2025 assessment.

What is the Difference Between MUET Test and MUET on Demand?

As we have explained above, as a rule of thumb, there are three main sessions for MUET in a year but in recent years, in 2018 specifically, the Malaysian Ministry of Education announced a new MUET assessment called the MoD which is short for MUET on Demand. So what is the difference between the MUET and the MUET on demand? To simplify, MUET on demand has assessments every month

Now let us go into detail about the MUET on demand. What makes the MUET on demand a good option for students as well as adults who aim to further their studies in Malaysian universities is the fact that they have assessments on a monthly basis. Unfortunately at the time this article was written, the MPM (Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia) had not announced their 2025 MoD schedule yet.

There are three different MOD methods for you to pick from. We have listed them below for your better understanding:

Computer-based Test

This is known as CBT. Choosing this option for your MUET on demand will cost RM250 if you hold a MyKad. If you are a foreigner with a passport, the cost for you to take CBT will be RM550. What makes this selection different from the rest is you will get to sit for a computer-based test in their allocated examination centres. The speaking component of the assessment will be done either face-to-face or online. Unlike normal MUET tests, you get your results in merely 3 weeks.

Paper-based Test

The only difference between this test and the computer-based test is instead of answering your questions on a computer, you get to do it on paper. The price is the same as the computer-based test for both MyKad and passport holders and you get the results in 3 weeks as well. Similarly, your speaking component of the assessment will be done either face-to-face or online.

MUET Express (MeX)

MUET express is another offering under the MUET on-demand assessment. It might come as a surprise but the cost of this test is a whopping RM800 for MyKad holders and RM1,600 for passport holders. Similar to the paper-based test, you will answer your assessment on paper so you must be wondering why it is so expensive. The reason for this is because, with the MUET express test, you get your results within 2 days which is impressive and well worth the money. Similar to the computer-based test and paper-based test, the MUET express speaking component will be tested either face-to-face or online.

What to Expect from the MUET Listening Component?

The listening component of MUET, with the code 800/1, constitutes 25% of the total assessment grade.

The main reason for this component is to assess a student’s ability to listen and understand spoken English. This is more specific for the context of higher education and includes dialogues which students must understand.

This assessment is further split into five different parts:

Part 1

The first part consists of dialogue that is approximately 600 to 650 words. Based on this dialogue, students will be given 7 multiple-choice questions with each question having 3 choices

Part 2

Part two of the listening component is a monologue that consists of 600 to 650 words as well. Based on this monologue, students will be given 7 multiple-choice questions with each question having 3 choices.

Part 3

Part 3 consists of 3 speakers and a monologue that consists of 350 to 400 words. Students will have to answer 3 multiple matching questions with 5 options provided.

Part 4

Part 4 of the listening test consists of a dialogue that consists of 650 to 700 words. Based on this dialogue, students will be given 7 multiple-choice questions with each question having 3 choices

Part 5

This makes up the last part of the MUET listening test and it is a short dialogue that consists of 250 to 300 words per dialogue. Based on this dialogue, students will be given 6 multiple-choice questions with each question having 3 choices.

The total marks for this component is 30 marks and takes approximately 50 minutes for the entire test.
