MUET, which is the short form for the Malaysian University English Test, first came about in the year 1999. This test was introduced to the Malaysian schooling system and is taken by not only local but also foreign students who aim to start and complete their degree in Malaysia.

The examination was introduced to assess the standard and quality of a student’s English proficiency, which will be essential for them to complete their degree. Since the registration for the 2025 MUET has already closed, those of you who are thinking about taking this test must sit for it in 2026. On this page, you will learn about the MUET timeline, syllabus, and exam format for the 2026 cycle.

Key Takeaways

  • MUET 2026 is offered across three sessions (April, June, and October), each with its own registration window. Missing a deadline means waiting for the next session, so mark your calendar early.
  • Can't wait for the regular sessions? MUET on Demand lets you take the test monthly through three formats: computer-based, paper-based, or MUET Express (which delivers results in just two days).
  • The exam tests Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing, each worth 25% of your total score. You can't afford to neglect any one skill if you're aiming for a high band.
  • MUET bands align with the international CEFR framework, and most Malaysian universities require at least Band 3 for admission. Competitive programs like Law and Medicine set the bar even higher, so the stronger your score, the more options you unlock.

MUET on Demand 2026 Schedule

In 2018, the Malaysian Ministry of Education announced a new MUET assessment called the MoD, which is short for MUET on demand. So what is the difference between the MUET and the MUET on demand? To simplify, MUET on demand has assessments every month.

Here is the MUET on-demand schedule for 2026:1

How Is MUET on Demand Different

There are three different MoD methods for you to pick from. We have listed them below for your better understanding:

Computer-Based Test

A row of black desktops arranged in neatly along a row of white desks.

This is known as CBT. What makes this selection different from the rest is that you will get to sit for a computer-based test in their allocated examination centres. The speaking component of the assessment will be done either face-to-face or online. Unlike normal MUET tests, you get your results in merely three weeks.

Paper-Based Test

The only difference between this test and the computer-based test is that instead of answering your questions on a computer, you get to do it on paper. The price is the same as the computer-based test for both MyKad and passport holders, and you get the results in three weeks as well. Similarly, your speaking component of the assessment will be done either face-to-face or online.

Make sure you're well-aware of the MUET marking criteria before you go in!

MUET Express (MeX)

MUET Express is another offering under the MUET on-demand assessment. Similar to the paper-based test, you will answer your assessment on paper, but you get your results within two days, which is impressive and well worth the higher cost of this exam. Similar to the computer-based test and paper-based test, the MUET Express speaking component will be tested either face-to-face or online.

What to Expect from the MUET Listening Component?

The listening part of MUET, with the code 800/1, constitutes 25% of the total assessment grade.

The main reason for this component is to assess a student’s ability to listen and understand spoken English. This is more specific to the context of higher education and includes dialogues that students must understand.

This assessment is further split into five different parts:

  • Part 1: Dialogue that is approximately 600 to 650 words. Based on this dialogue, students will be given seven multiple-choice items, with each question having three choices.
  • Part 2: Monologue that consists of 600 to 650 words as well. Based on this monologue, students will be given seven multiple-choice questions, with each question having three choices.
  • Part 3: Three speakers and a monologue that consists of 350 to 400 words. Students will have to answer three multiple-choice matching items with five options provided.
  • Part 4: Dialogue that consists of 650 to 700 words. Based on this dialogue, students will be given seven multiple-choice questions, with each question having three choices.
  • Part 5: Short dialogue that consists of 250 to 300 words per dialogue. Based on this dialogue, students will be given six multiple-choice questions, with each question having three choices.

The total marks for this component are 90. It's a tricky component, so make sure you've prepared using the best resources for MUET.

What to Expect from the MUET Speaking Component?

This part of MUET, with the code 800/2, constitutes 25% of the entire assessment grade.

In this assessment, students will have to give an oral presentation, and consist of two parts:

  • Part 1: Candidates are given two minutes to prepare based on a written prompt given. They will then be given two minutes to present what they have prepared.
  • Part 2: This part is a group-based discussion. Students are given written questions with five different prompts. Based on these, students are given three minutes to prepare and 8 to 12 minutes to present what they have prepared.

Here's how to improve your oral English skills by yourself:

What to Expect from the MUET Reading Component?

The reading component of MUET with the code 800/3 constitutes 25% of the entire assessment grade.

There are a total of seven parts for this assessment, and students are given a total of 75 minutes to complete the entire assessment, which carries a total of 90 marks.

  • Part 1: There will be three short texts, and students will need to answer four multiple-choice matching items.
  • Parts 2 and 3: There will be two texts with approximately 300 to 400 words. Students will have to answer seven multiple-choice items with three options each.
  • Part 4: Students will be given two different texts, and they will have to answer six multiple-choice questions with three options.
  • Part 5: Students will be given one text with approximately 500 to 600 words. They will have to answer six gapped texts with six missing sentences.
  • Parts 6 and 7: Candidates will be given two texts that consist of approximately 700 to 900 words. They will have to answer 14 multiple-choice questions with four options each.

What to Expect from the MUET Writing Component?

The writing component of MUET with the code 800/4 constitutes 25% of the entire assessment grade.

This part of the MUET component consists of two parts, with 50 minutes allocated.

  • Part 1: Candidates will be given a letter or an email with approximately 100 to 135 words. They will then need to respond to that letter or email with at least 100 words.
  • Part 2: Students will be given an idea or a problem in 40 to 80 words. Based on this, students will have to write an essay with at least 250 words.

MUET 2026 Band Description

MUET results are reported using a banding system that aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

You receive an aggregated score ranging from 1 to 360, which corresponds to a band from 1.0 to 5+. Each band is mapped to a CEFR level, which provides a standardised measure of English language proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Here's a table that outlines what the different bands mean:1

ScoreBandCEFR LevelProficiency Level
331–3605+C1+Proficient
294–3305.0C1Proficient
258–2934.5B2Independent
211–2574.0B2Independent
164–2103.5B1Independent
123–1633.0B1Independent
82–1222.5A2Basic
36–812.0A2Basic
1–351.0A2Basic

Your MUET band score plays a big role in getting into a Malaysian university, which is one of the main benefits of the exam. Without the right band, the door to your chosen program might not open.

Most universities set a minimum of Band 3 for general admission, which is described by the MAJLIS PEPERIKSAAN MALAYSIA as:

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar, or of personal interest.
Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give
reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

But if you're eyeing a more competitive institution, you'll likely need to aim higher. Programs like Law, Medicine, and Engineering demand strong language skills because the coursework is dense, technical, and discussion-heavy, so expect requirements of Band 4 or above. Here is how you can boost your MUET band.

The good news is that if you fall just short of the cutoff, many institutions offer English language support to help you get up to speed. The bottom line: the higher your score, the more options you'll have. You can check your MUET result by visiting the official portal here.

Boost Your MUET Band with Superprof

As you can see from above, the MUET syllabus is quite different from other assessments. The main reason for this is that it aims to look at students’ ability to handle and manage their higher education, which is set in English. One thing you can do to help yourself in MUET is to hire a tutor who can help you study and guide you in your MUET assessments.

Writing is only one part of the assessment. In order for you to score well, you must be able to present, talk, understand, and listen. What better way to do this than having a tutor who can guide you and with whom you can practise?

On Superprof, we have tutors who are waiting to help you with your MUET preparation. With their help, you will not only be prepared for all your assessments, but also you will gain the confidence to speak eloquently and convey your points, especially during your speaking rest. Our platform is user-friendly, so it will not be difficult to find a tutor who can help you. It does not matter if you are from Kedah or Kuala Lumpur; we have tutors listed from all over Malaysia who can help you study effectively and achieve the best band in your MUET assessment.
