Have you ever watched a good movie and got surprised when you discover that the story is actually adapted from a book/literary play?

It is no surprise that many movies and even acclaimed series that we grow up watching are based on books. In fact, adapted movies are one of the most popular choices among many film-makers because they already have a steady reader fanbase. Take the Harry Potter movies and Hunger Games franchise for instance.

This leads us to our next point.

Wouldn't it be interesting to study the written works of various genres and be transported into a whole new world of boundless imagination?

Well, if you have just nodded while reading this, you should probably consider signing up for STPM Literature in English once you have decided to pursue your Form 6 studies.

What Are Some Famous Movie Adaptations Based On Prescribed Novels/Plays For STPM Literature In English?

Before we get down to the nitty-gritty of the STPM Literature in English paper, here are 3 movie adaptations to get you excited to study the adapted texts later.

a) Pride and Prejudice

This novel has one of the most iconic opening lines of all time. Everything about this Jane Austen story is just CLASSIC.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”

The 2005 movie adaptation certainly got many viewers (yours truly included) swooning over the slow-burn romance of Elizabeth Bennett (played by Keira Knightley) and Mr Darcy (played by Matthew Macfayden). But the movie also interestingly and vividly depicted the portrayal of sisterhood, betrayal, awkward suitors and differences in socioeconomic statuses in the Regency era.

But take my word for it, the book is certainly better as it offers more depth and a comprehensive description of character and plot development.

b) The Joy Luck Club

Before Crazy Rich Asians went full-scale Hollywood, The Joy Luck Club was one of the most acclaimed movies that featured a solid Asian American cast. It was released in 1993.

The book by Amy Tan originally consists of 16 stories that feature four mothers and daughters of Chinese American descent. The story is widely popular because it manages to spark active discussions and debates on the Chinese culture, identity, inter-generational relationships between mother and daughters.

c) She's The Man (Twelfth Night)

It's no doubt that William Shakespeare is one of the most influential writers of all time. Some of his notable works include the tragic Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream and many more.

Twelfth Night is a play that inspired the 2006 movie She's The Man starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum.

The movie follows the funny (mis)adventures of Viola Hastings who disguised herself as a male to replace her twin brother, Sebastian to play soccer. The switch of identities troupe is well played in this movie and you will certainly have fun reading and analysing the original play by Shakespeare.

It actually combines theoretical and practical aspects of reading literature. Hence, you have to READ a lot about various genres, cultures, ideologies and even gender theories to have strong support arguments for your essay writing later.

Welcome to the world of essay writing! You are required to write 3 essays for Section A, Section B and Section C throughout the 3 semesters on different reading materials. c) Give direct and constructive feedback on your progress

Having a private tutor allows you to share freely what you think about the texts. At times, your interpretation of the texts might be clouded or one-sided due to your point of view and experiences based on one small part of the text instead of looking at the overall picture of the story.

For instance, when you are reading a story, you might solely focus on the traits of major characters instead of paying attention to the character development of the rest. You might face difficulty answering a similar question as shown below.

Sample question: In Pride and Prejudice, all the characters exhibit foolishness. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Discuss, with close reference to the novel.

During this discussion and sharing session, your tutor will then give you suggestions on ways to improve by pointing out several loopholes when you're developing your arguments in your essay.

Don't miss out on these useful tips to score well for your STPM Literature in English paper.
