About Ms Shiren

I studied African politics at the University of Toronto; have written for African-descended community magazines; and lived and worked in West Africa and in countries with large African-descended populations, including Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and North America. In my work, study and travels, I have been exposed to the diversity of culture and expression of African-descended peoples. I continue to research political, historical, and cultural themes through current events, literature, global trends and movements, interviews with key figures, and travel. I eagerly teach these themes to young descendants and anyone interested in a deeper exposure to the vast experiences of African-diasporic identity and reality.

About the lesson

We will explore the history of African peoples on the continent and across the globe, major historic trends, and political realities, and cultural commonalities and differences. While we will first cover the main tenets and hypotheses of African historical and cultural benchmarks, this will be a course of exploration to learn about the many African-descended communities, their connections with each other, and with other communities in different parts of the world. Beyond the basic introduction, there will be endless room for exploration of various communities.

Excellent! Shiren was very meticulous about directing students in the ways to approach assignments so that there was a successful outcome. Using her methods she focuses on guiding students in a direction where they will learn the most.Very accommodating in terms of study sessions and generally helpful in any way she can be.
