• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  Besides mathematics, one of the subjects that I enjoyed the most studying in high school was economics, which being newly introduced to the education system, was offered for only 1 year. The economics teacher, Alma, made the classes so engaging and interesting. I remember very vividly the moment the curiosity switch was turned on; in a discussion session, the teacher showed us a small exhibit from Shakespeare that started with "Neither a borrower nor a lender be…" and we had to economically assess this expression. I learned that day that in economics, there are always two sides of the coin, and it made me more interested in the subject.
  
  I was very lucky during secondary and high school to have had a wonderful teachers who made learning fun, so teaching or tutoring always seemed something I would like to pursue after my studies. It started with helping my friends with statistics during university, but the interest fully developed in 2016 when after being encouraged by my mentor, Revi, I started to do private tutoring on a more regular basis.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  One of the subjects I have found myself tutoring the most in the past couple of years is econometrics. I really enjoy sessions in this subject because, depending on the format of the course, it offers a variety of approaches to both learning and tutoring it. Sometimes it will be more statistically and mathematically oriented (especially when proving the properties of OLS), which makes it technically more challenging, but even more so rewarding when students show they can do it on their own.
  
  Sometimes it will be more applied, and you have to understand the experiment design, the advantages and limitations, or think about ways the design can be implemented in other studies. I love the discussions we have with students on the applications because it gives them an opportunity to revise both the theory and the practical side of econometrics. I have also taught mathematics, statistics, macro and microeconomics-related topics, including market structures and equilibrium, game theory and game theory applied to market structures. Game theory is always very challenging to teach, but I like a good challenge.

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  I have been very lucky to meet inspiring people at different stages of my life, and I try to make the best of everything they have taught me. My parents taught me that hard work will always pay off, which is why I always try to preserve and be consistent with everything I pursue. My mathematics teachers (Leonora, Desdemona, Esat) taught me to enjoy mathematics, and I try to be as inspiring to my students as they were to me; my economics teacher Alma is still a role model in teaching methods that engage large classrooms. My mentor Revi is a role model who encourages me to embrace new topics to teach and take on new challenges.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  Every student is different in the way they process new information or the help they need with specific subjects. I believe that understanding those differences and applying them to the student's needs is one of the good tutor qualities. Being honest when you don't know the answer to a question, never assuming but always asking, and accepting that both tutor and student are learning together are further qualities, I would add.

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  When I was a university student, there was only a one-term module on econometrics at most. Now econometrics is incorporated in most subjects.

• 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  I believe that even topics you already know, you can always learn either new details or new ways to explain it. It is important to be open to learning and re-learning.

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  Life is too beautiful to have only one passion. While I do enjoy teaching, I get easily excited by a good book (thriller,
  slice of life), playing volleyball, or learning a new language.
