Do you remember the epic 100m butterfly swimming race in the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro?

Who Are Some Malaysian Swimming Athletes That Have Competed In The Olympics?

We certainly can't proceed without talking about our very own Malaysian athletes in this article.

Here are three Malaysian swimmers who have made us proud by competing in the Olympic Games in recent years.

1. Welson Sim

A two-time South East Asian Games gold medallist in 2015 and 2017, Welson hails from Sarawak and initially learnt swimming to battle asthma at the age of 10.

He later showed great potential and passion for swimming and decided to take swimming more seriously when he transferred to the Bukit Jalil Sports School when he was 15.

He has represented Malaysia in the Men's 200m and 400m freestyle at the Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics in 2016 and 2021, respectively.

2. Phee Jinq En

A fellow Selangorian, Jinq En, is no stranger when it comes to smashing swimming records. She is currently the best national record holder in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke swimming categories.

She has won four gold medals from the 2015 South East Asian Games in Singapore to the 2019 South East Asian Games in the Philippines.

Jinq En has represented Malaysia in the Women's 100m and Women's 200m breaststroke in the Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics.

3. Daniel Bego

Do you know that Daniel Bego was the first Malaysian swimmer to compete in three different swimming events in the Olympics?

He also has won a total of eleven Southeast Asia gold medals, where he clinched 5 of them during the 2009 Vientiane SEA Games. In the same year, he was also crowned Olympian of the year by the Malaysian Ministry of Sports.

Daniel represented Malaysia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle events.
