Do you remember the epic 100m butterfly swimming race in the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janerio?

It was a historic moment for two main reasons.

Firstly, there were three silver medalists in the race. All three of them (including the all-time favourite, US swimmer, Michael Phelps) clocked in a matching record of 51.14 seconds. Secondly, the race was won by 21-year-old Joseph Schooling from Singapore, making him the first Singaporean to clinch the nation's first-ever Olympics gold medal.

Fellow Malaysians, we'll catch up soon for the Paris 2024 Olympics hopefully.

That being said, competitive swimming has been one of the most watched sports worldwide throughout the years due to its intensity and variety of different swimming strokes.

In this article, we will be looking at the general competitive swimming scene in Malaysia, the benefits of investing in a swimming lesson regardless of your age, some of the well-known swimming academies that you can find in Selangor and the platforms to find a swimming private tutor near you.

Who Are Some Malaysian Swimming Athletes That Have Competed In The Olympics?

We certainly can't proceed without talking about our very own Malaysian athletes in this article.

Here are three Malaysian swimmers who have made us proud by competing in the Olympics games in recent years.

1. Welson Sim

A two times South East Asian Games gold medallist in 2015 and 2017, Welson hails from Sarawak and initially learnt swimming to battle asthma at the age of 10.

He later showed great potential and passion for swimming and decided to take swimming more seriously when he transferred to the Bukit Jalil Sports School when he was 15.

He has represented Malaysia in the Men's 200m and 400m freestyle at the Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics in 2016 and 2021 respectively.

2. Phee Jinq En

A fellow Selangorian, Jinq En is no stranger when it comes to smashing swimming records. She is currently the best national record holder in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke swimming categories.

She has won four gold medals from the 2015 South East Asian Games in Singapore to the 2019 South East Asian Games in the Philippines.

Jinq En has represented Malaysia in the Women's 100m and Women's 200m breaststroke in the Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics.

3. Daniel Bego

Do you know that Daniel Bego was the first Malaysian swimmer to compete in three different swimming events in the Olympics?

He also has won a total of eleven South East Asia gold medals where he clinched 5 of them during the 2009 Vientiane SEA games. In the same year, he was also crowned Olympian of the year by the Malaysian Ministry of Sports.

Daniel represented Malaysian in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle events.

Is Competitive Swimming For You? What Are Some Tips That You Should Take Note Of?

Now that you have read about our fellow Malaysian swimmers, you may be wondering what it takes to make waves should you (or your child) decide to pursue competitive swimming in the future.

Even though the Olympics seems to be the end goal, do bear in mind that competitive swimming can take place at any stage and at different age levels.

Here are three important tips to determine if you are cut out for competitive swimming.

Tip 1: You have a die-hard passion for winning and you can win

The name itself is pretty explanatory. You got to love competition to win the competition.

You have the motivation and goals to be the first and to always challenge yourself beyond your comfort zone. You hate coming second. That said, you have also proven your ability in some swimming competitions around you.

Tip 2: You are willing to sacrifice your time for long-term training

Whenever you watch any interviews or documentaries featuring a swimming athlete, you're bound to hear this recurring word.

D.I.S.C.I.P.L.I.N.E

No matter how talented or skilful you are, you will not go far if you are not determined to put in continuous effort in your training and practice sessions.

On average, a professional swimmer has to spend four to five hours in the water and another few hours in the gym to build his/her muscles and core strength.

You should ask yourself if you're willing to put your whole heart into this sport in the long run.

Tip 3:  You need to have the well-balanced physical and mental endurance

While it feels good to win all the time, it's almost impossible to keep a winning streak every time you're in action. At times, it could be a recurring mistake, a distraction, or an injury that caused you to lose confidence or focus to perform well.

That's why it's also important to cultivate a positive mindset when you're competing. Keep believing that the best is yet to come and remember that it's not over till it's over.

Don't give up and despair and just keep pushing on.

Why You Should Invest In A Swimming Lesson For Yourself/For Your Child Even If You Are Not Competing?

While the main theme of this article focuses on competitive swimming, you can still enrol for a swimming lesson as a hobby.

Here are three solid reasons why swimming should be your next hobby (if you haven't learnt it).

Reason 1: It is a great recreational activity that the whole family can enjoy together

There's no age limit when it comes to swimming. Anyone from babies to senior citizens can enjoy swimming together. It is a great bonding activity and even without competition, you can still have fun splashing and stroking in the water as a family.

Reason 2: It can save a person's life

This is the reason why lifeguards exist. Having the ability to swim puts you at an advantage should you come across a situation where you're suddenly thrown into the water. Drowning cases are scary. You not only can save others but also save yourself when you master swimming.

Reason 3: It has many health benefits

Last but not least, swimming is a great workout for your whole body. While you're moving about in the water and flexing your hands and legs, being in the water also helps to calm your mind and put your body at ease.

It helps to strengthen and tone your muscles as well as reduce your stress in general. The health benefits just get longer as we list them, seriously.
