Let's go

#1. Learn the SPM English format through reference and past papers.

Are you already familiar with the SPM English format for all papers? Even if you are just a novice at SPM English, working with reference and past papers can immediately provide you with an overview of the SPM English format and even the assessment criteria for your exam.

Be sure to also check out the latest SPM English syllabus and stay up-to-date with any changes to the format.

Here's how you can learn the SPM English format through past papers:

  • Observe question types and exam patterns when revising with model papers. Be clear about the differences in the SPM English format from SPM English Paper 1 to Paper 4.
  • Try out a mock test at home with a past SPM English paper and see if you can complete the paper on time as if you were taking an actual exam. After several practice rounds, you will feel more confident to sit for your SPM English paper.
  • For SPM English Paper 1, you can quickly pick up vocabulary and grammar rules by completing just several reference papers.

Completing past papers in the SPM English Paper 1 format will be especially helpful in improving your English reading and comprehension abilities. Since SPM English Paper 1 is focused on multiple-choice questions for vocabulary and grammar, using reference and past papers will train you to quickly understand and identify information in the texts provided, helping you choose the best answers.

#2. Map out points in your English essay SPM paper.

You may have heard of this tip already, but you should always make a map of your points before writing your English essay SPM answers.

In SPM English Paper 2, you need to complete a total of three writing tasks. Apart from the short communicative message task in Part 1, Parts 2 and 3 require you to structure your essay so that you have a definitive introduction, body and conclusion. This is where the planning and organisation of your ideas need to come in.

Here are some general tips for writing an organised and well-structured English essay:

  • When mapping out your points, list three to four main ideas which will become the topic sentences for the body of your essay. You should start each paragraph (in the essay body) with these topic sentences.
  • Choose an intriguing way to start your essay. You can write your introductory paragraph with a quote, amusing fact or question in line with the exam notes. What can you write to grab the reader's attention?
  • End your essay with a concise summary of what you have written. Your conclusion should briefly summarise your main ideas and provide a final stand about the chosen question. However, this may not apply to a story-writing question which does not have a definite conclusion.

Choose a blank area in your question paper (not the answer sheet!) to map out the points for your English essay. You are free to draw a mind map or list your points, but be clear about the headings for each of your main ideas and structure your points in a way that doesn't overlap.

#4. Practise for your English speaking test daily.

Are you aware that you may be overlooking your English speaking test?

Although SPM English Paper 3 is only 13 minutes long, it carries the same weightage as all the other papers in your SPM English examination! Therefore, you should take some time out of your English reading and writing revision to focus on improving your fluency and clarity in oral English. With some practice, you can learn techniques for conveying your ideas convincingly and confidently!

These tips will help you prepare for your English speaking test even if you are not a native speaker.

  • Listen to an English podcast for 10 minutes a day. If you regularly browse YouTube or even podcast apps like Spotify, look for topics you are interested in, be it art, psychology, fitness or food. Your goal is to look for English podcasts and listen to how native speakers use the English language. This will help you learn how to speak English naturally and pick up on areas like tone of voice, accent and diction according to different situations.
  • Record yourself speaking in English daily. Only one way to find out what you sound like when speaking English - record yourself speaking in English for 5 minutes a day. You could talk about how your day went or what you were grateful for on that day! You'll be surprised at how quickly you'll notice the language areas you want to improve in.
  • Practise exam questions with a friend. It's wise to look for an English-speaking friend to practise real English speaking test questions with! Take some time out after school to practise for your English speaking test with your friend, or do it over video call on the weekends.

Just make sure that both you and your friend are clear about the SPM English format and marking schemes!

#5. Use online platforms to improve listening skills for your SPM English paper.

SPM English Paper 4 is a 40-minute-long listening exam that can leave you feeling either satisfied or frustrated, depending on whether you have gauged what the English speakers talked about in the audio recording.

This is perhaps one of the more challenging SPM English 2024/2025 papers if you do not speak or listen to much English at home. Fortunately, various online learning platforms are dedicated to helping students listen better in English! Find some fun websites below to train your English listening skills.

  • Learn English Online by British Council - browse through English listening exercises from the CEFR A1 to C1 levels
  • Daily Dictation - immediately practise listening to English audio and correct your answers
  • EnglishClub.com - get a free listening skills guide and complete listening quizzes on the website

When choosing an online platform to train your English listening skills, we encourage you to look for platforms that use native English speakers or trained professionals in the listening exercises, ensuring that you pick up formal English that will be assessed in your SPM English Paper 4. At the same time, engaging in these exercises should be interactive (using quizzes, games, etc) while still allowing you to keep track of your English listening progress.

We hope that you can apply these tips in preparation for your SPM English 2024/2025 examination. It may seem like a lot to prepare for, but with the right mindset, dedication to improving, and tips to ace your papers, success in your SPM English examination will be well within your reach.
