🎯Effective Study Techniques and Tips

Let's use the following tips to prepare effectively for the upcoming SPM English examination.

🌀Tip 1: Understand the exam structure

Note how the questions are structured along with the marking schemes and assessment criteria provided in the model answers. By paying attention to the examination format, you will have a clearer idea of what your exam will look like and feel more confident walking into the exam hall.

Practising with past exam papers and worksheets gives you an idea of what to expect in the actual exam.

Read the new SPM English syllabus here to know more.

📝 Tip 2: Look out for special exam rules

Not all your papers follow the same format. For example, the speaking test involves working with a partner, while the listening test involves listening to audio recordings. Some examples of these special rules include:

  • Taking turns speaking during the group speaking part of the English speaking test.
  • Listening carefully to all instructions from the interlocutor before responding.
  • Answering all questions of the listening test within the given timeframe, where the audio recordings will only be replayed once.

📚 Tip 3: Match resources to your learning style

Whether you're purchasing official past papers, sample model papers, reference books, or even watching SPM English videos, choose resources that suit your learning needs.

For example, if you are an auditory learner, reading the questions and answers aloud to yourself can be a better approach than just creating notes!

Learn more about your learning style here so that you can use your SPM English resources effectively.

⏱️Tip 4: Time Management Strategies

Remember the proverb "A stitch in time saves nine?" This is true of time management strategies.1 Effective time management doesn’t just maximise your productivity but also helps you manage stress. A well-structured schedule prevents last-minute scrambles and ensures you are well-prepared for your exams.

âś…Start by creating a study schedule where you allocate time to all papers

âś…Be honest about your needs. Difficult topics may need more preparation time, so allocate more time to them. To stay on track, you can tweak the Eisenhower Matrix, also known as the Urgent-Important Matrix, to prioritise tasks in order of importance.

ac_unit
The Eisenhower Matrix
Delegate your tasks into 4 parts:

Urgent and Important: Tasks that are difficult and need your immediate attention
Important but Not Urgent: Building notes and practising daily
Urgent but Not Important: Doing last-minute underlining instead of revising
Neither Urgent nor Important: Avoiding distractions like social media or hanging out with friends

✅Finally, don’t forget to include short breaks in your routine. These are necessary to keep you recharged and keep your study sessions more focused.

🧠Tip 5: Active Learning Methods

Active learning methods help your brain retain information more easily. Rather than becoming a passive receiver of information, the learner actively participates in the learning process, leading to improved memory retention.

compare
What is Active Learning?

Bonwell and Eison define active learning strategies as "instructional activities involving students in doing things and thinking about what they are doing.”  Activities could range from very simple (e.g., pausing the lecture to allow students to clarify and organise their ideas by discussing with neighbours) to more complex ones, such as using case studies.

You can apply the following techniques to remember better:

🔴Summarise info – Summarising topics and information in your own words helps your brain to simplify complex information and remember it better

🔴Self-quizzing – Regularly testing yourself using flashcards, past papers and trial questions helps you identify learning gaps

🔴Group discussions – Engaging in group discussions and discussing ideas with one another deepens your understanding and provides you with a different perspective on things
