Malaysia Examination Board or also known as Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia (LPM) along with Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) has always worked hand in hand in order to improve the system that will help the students taking the Ujian Peperiksaan Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) to achieve the best results.
In 2018, a new learning format, known as The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), has been implemented in Malaysia’s preschool, primary school for standard 1 and 2 students and secondary school form 1 students.
That is to say, this year’s UPSR candidates will be the last batch that will undergo the examination using the older UPSR format. It would certainly be a historical moment for both the students and the teachers to look back in the future.
For 2021 English UPSR format integrated more questions aligning with Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT), or High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), where students will be tested on their own t,hinking and analytical skills instead of just answering a direct question. These questions may be a bit tricky to answer but worry not! Superprof is going to uncover some tips and tricks on how to answer English UPSR questions as well as its format in a bit.
For now, let’s look at the table below to discuss the format for the English UPSR papers.

Paper 1 English Pemahaman Section A
Getting more than 15 marks in Section A alone is easy! You just have to remember these four important steps when answering the question;
- Step 1: Read the question carefully! Identify the keywords and the tenses used in the text.
- Step 2: Identify the main idea. What is the setting in the question?
- Step 3: Try to get the general idea of what the question wants. Does it want you to find a word with the ‘same meaning' or an ‘opposite meaning’?
- Step 4: Double-check your answer! This is very important as you may miss out on some info when reading the question for the first time. So, you should definitely make a habit of reading the question at least twice and scan through all the answer options carefully.
Besides the tips listed above, remember to be alert when the question uses the word ‘except’ as it might be a trick question to catch you off-guard. Students should already have knowledge of all the grammar rules and usages such as articles, adverbs, conjunctions, tenses and etc. Our tutors at Superprof can help you in covering these topics so you can tackle UPSR English papers with confidence and help you find the Latest Reference UPSR Papers!
Paper 1 English Pemahaman Section B
For Section B's paper, there are 5 questions that you need to answer.
For question number 21, you would need to analyze the pictures provided and write an appropriate response to the question and answers from the speech bubble.
First, analyze the pictures given carefully. Look for any sign or indicator that might give you a clue on what’s going on.
For example, the picture shows a man talking to a woman holding a pen and paper, and in the background is a sign that reads, ‘Restaurant Kak Mah’. By analyzing the picture, we can interpret the situation as a man dining in a restaurant and getting his orders taken.
When answering the dialogue-based question, you should remember that it should be a conversation. One person is asking the question while the other response. The answer should be relevant to the picture!
The next set of questions is where we will encounter the KBKK type question again. In these questions, you are required to read a passage or story and answer the related questions. Thus, here are the steps that you should take before answering Section B questions.
Firstly, read the passage and then read the questions carefully. Then, underline the WH questions; (What/ Why/ Which/ When/ Who/ How). And then, find the answers in the text and underline the sentences. Make sure you use the correct punctuation and spellings when filling in your answers in the spaces provided.
All in all, the Paper 1 questions test the student’s ability to analyze and identify the question and provide an accurate answer in line with correct vocabularies and grammar.
Scoring a high mark in this paper might be easier as it has clear markings and answers so make sure you revise well on your daily English lessons with your teachers and tutors!
UPSR English Format Paper 2
As for the English Paper 2 question, it has 3 different sections. Section A is a subjective-based question that requires information transfer and understanding of what the question needs.
Section B is more of an open-ended question where section C focuses on the student’s writing skills instead. The total marks for this paper is also 50 marks.
Paper 2 English Penulisan- Section A
Section A for Paper 2 requires you to analyze the graphic information and transfer the correct answer. Read the passage and make sure the information you transferred matches the sentence in the text.
Paper 2 English Penulisan- Section B
In Section B, the question will require you to answer a few subjective questions. Read the text provided and answer carefully. In the next question, students will be asked to write either (an/a) ;
- Greeting card
- Formal & Informal letters
You should familiarize yourself with all the writing formats in order to answer Section B questions successfully.
Paper 2 English Penulisan- Section C
And in Section C, this is where it’ll truly test your writing skills! You will be given a set of pictures and disjointed words in which you have to write out a story based on the given pictures and words.
But before you start, read the instructions carefully! You are given two questions with different pictures and scenarios.
‘Choose only ONE!’ Some students would miss the instruction and answered both of the essay questions.
‘Isn’t it better to answer more questions? We can get more points!’
“No.” You won’t be scoring any extra points by writing more essays than what is written in the instruction. The examiner will only mark the first one they read and ignore the other. So, not only will you waste precious time, you will also deplete your energy and creativity by splitting your ideas into two different essays!
Hence, you should only choose and answer ONE question from Paper 2 Section C.
Now, let’s move on to how you should write your story. Your story must be between 80-100 words, so plan carefully on what you should include and exclude from your story.
First, look at the pictures carefully. Analyze every detail and create a short storyline to describe the pictures. Remember to plan the following when writing a story.
- The beginning/start
- The climax
- The ending
Sentence structure and planning are important in writing a good story essay. Your spelling, punctuations, and grammar will also affect your overall marks.
Knowledge is silver among the poor, gold among the nobles and a jewel among princes.
Know of any idioms or proverbs? Write that down! Using an idiomatic expression is a way to make your writing more interesting and fun, and this will surely show the examiner that you have a broad sense of vocabulary compared to the other students.
Here, the student’s creativity and effective use of grammar will be evaluated. Do a lot of writing exercises to further improve your English writing skills. Read a book or a novel to gain more inspiration and spark your creativity. Do you want to take a look on how to answer UPSR Essay Writing Paper?
