Yoga was initially well-known only in India. However, yoga has become a huge hit all across the globe for the last several decades. Almost everyone has at least heard about yoga even if they don’t know what it is exactly. It has become so popular that even celebrities have jumped on this bandwagon which has become a part of the modern lifestyle.

The beginnings of Yoga were developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. The word yoga was first mentioned in the Rig Veda which is the sacred ancient text written in Sanskrit.

What comes to mind when you think of yoga? Do you imagine bending and twisting your body into odd positions? Or are you conjuring images of people meditating with their legs crossed? You also tend to hear words like inner peace, calm and balance. This leads us to question:

What is Yoga?

“Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” which means “union,” “bind,” or “yoke”. Basically, it means uniting or integrating your mind, body, soul and universal consciousness.

Yoga helps to harmonise the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of yourself in order to experience and achieve peace and self-realisation. This is achieved by using different yoga practices such as the pranayama (breath regulation practices), asanas (poses) and meditation.

This article explores the different types of yoga, methods on how to learn yoga, the many benefits you reap by practising yoga and where you can learn yoga.

What Equipments are Needed for Yoga?

Want to start learning yoga from home? One of the best investments one can make before starting to learn yoga is to make sure you have the right equipment to support the yoga movements in order to maximise the results of your exercise. This will not only assist in achieving proper positions but can avoid unwanted accidents like slips and falls.

Having proper yoga equipment can also make you more comfortable when doing yoga movements which will make it more enjoyable and fun.

Comfortable Attire

In order to perform yoga movements freely, wearing the right clothes is necessary. Do not wear loose pants and shirts as they can interfere with yoga movements. Choose pants and shirts that are elastic and absorb sweat well. Clothes that are a good fit are said to not only aid in blood circulation but ease pressure away from muscles.

Yoga Mats

Use a yoga mat as a base to perform yoga movements. Yoga mats will make your experience more comfortable while trying out new moves and poses. Yoga mats also serve to prevent injuries and cushion hard impacts if you slip.

Yoga block

Even though a yoga block was invented before the yoga mat, it is gaining popularity only now. A yoga block is a tool that is used as an extension of the arm but is also used to support the body while doing yoga. This tool is usually used by beginners who are not yet proficient in yoga movements as it helps them settle better into yoga positions. Yoga blocks can be made from wood chips, wood, or even thick foam.

Yoga Strap

A yoga strap is a tool used to perfect body posture when doing yoga. This tool is mainly used when you are in a sitting position to hold your position. There are two types of yoga straps which are the belt strap which is shaped like a belt and the infinity strap which is shaped like a double circle strap.
