About Thomas

Hi! My name's Tom and I live in Guildford. I went to school at Guildford Royal Grammar School (2013-20), then studied Classics at the University of Oxford (2020-24). I am currently taking a gap year, on which I have been working on a building site (!) and will be working as an assistant at a school in London from 2025. I am tutoring Latin and Ancient Greek to supplement my work, and will be applying for a Masters in Ancient History in the coming cycle. In the past I have also offered advice and mock interview practice for university applications, especially for Oxbridge; having been in the system recently I have a good insight into what is looked for and valued by University Classics Departments.

About the lesson

I graduated from the University of Oxford with a Classics degree in 2024; in my finals I obtained firsts in three of my four translation papers in Latin and Ancient Greek. My favourite authors at the moment are Pindar, Homer and Cicero. I have several years of experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level students from mentoring programmes at school and university. Currently, I am also tutoring an 11 year old in English reading and writing. My lessons are typically 1 hour long, although I can usually be flexible on this! I focus on what each different pupil needs, according to their circumstances. Frequently the area which needs most work on is language skills. I try to integrate language work as soon as possible with the literature papers for GCSE and A-Level. This is because the material in the language and literature papers are reciprocally useful, as intended by the exam boards. A lot can get done in only the space of an hour when tuition is one-on-one, and I have seen huge leaps in improvement when my pupils work hard!
