About Veroni
Dedicated, motivated and detail-oriented biologist (Ph.D. degree in cell & molecular biology) from York University. I was fortunate to begin my teaching path while I was a graduate student at York University. I was a teaching assistant for 6 years and taught a variety of biology courses including genetics, microbiology, histology, and anatomy. I believe my role as a teacher is to assist my students in their learning process. All my students are unique and they prefer different styles of teaching and learning. It is my responsibility to find what they prefer and give them the right opportunity to work on their learning process. It is important for the students to approach the instructor to get the help they need to improve their learning skills. For this, I try my best to be nice and fair to my students so that they can approach me with questions without any hesitations. With the experience I have gained as a teaching assistant, I like to pass on my knowledge and assist my students in their learning.

I have summarized my teaching practices into
three main concepts: (1) encourage active learning; (2) evaluate student learning; and (3) instructor and student feedback.
Encourage active learning
In terms of my preferred teaching style, I encourage active learning over passive learning. Active learning is where students participate in discussions and try to solve problems on their own.
Whereas, in the passive learning, the instructor teaches the lesson with minimal interaction with the students. To facilitate active learning, I ask students the questions and let them figure out the
answers first before giving them the answers. For example, in biology lab, we work with different chemicals for different experiments and it is important for students to know why we use a particular chemical in an experiment. So I ask them why we use it and how does the chemical interact with other substances to give the expected results. Also, I let my students work in groups for lab related experiments or to prepare presentation slides. These group works allows them to get an opportunity
to engage in with other students. This will guide them to build their team working skills which is also important for their professional life in the future.
Evaluate student learning
I usually give small quizzes after each lectures to evaluate my students learning. This will also assist both the teacher and learner to self-evaluate their teaching and learning, respectively. All my quizzes are graded and those grades are contributed to my students’ overall grades for the course. I think grades will give them some evaluation of their effort they put in the study material. I also incorporate critical thinking and analysis based questions on normal quizzes to encourage them to think deep about what they learn. This will be a good practice for the students to do well on the final exam as well.
Instructor and student feedback
As an instructor, I usually give a lot of feedbacks/commends when grading assignments and lab reports and theses feedbacks are very helpful for the students to learn their mistakes. Learning is
a stepwise process and the current mistakes will help students to improve their writing in the future. The more feedbacks they get from the instructor, the more improved their work will be in the
future. I encourage feedbacks from my students as well.
Previously I have used summative feedback method to obtain feedback on my teaching practices. This summative feedback is obtained from students in the last week of classes to evaluate the course director, TA and the course. In addition to this feedback method, I might consider incorporating formative feedback in the future, at least once in the middle of the semester. I would choose something simple as the START, STOP and CONTINUE form of formative method to get my students feedback and use their comments to make any changes to assist my students throughout the course. This method has minimal questions and require less time therefore, we won’t take away a lot of time from lecturing/lab works/tutorials. These feedbacks will assist me to update by beliefs of teaching and learning.
