I’ve known Giles as a fellow writer for nearly 30 years. He is an excellent poet, with a great reputation amongst his peers and a series of impressive publications.

I know he has taught creative writer for years too, and I know of his fine work for the Oxford Centre for Continuing Education from the 90s. I only regret not being able to give him work at my university during my time as course coordinator. I know he would have been great in the team. He’s intelligent, patient and empathetic. He sets himself high standards, but doesn’t mak3 a fuss about it.

Giles has taught a range of courses, specifically on poetry but often on wider literature topics, for our department for several years. He is always a popular tutor, and provides thorough and careful feedback for our students. At the Department for Continuing Education we provide open-access teaching at undergraduate level to a wide community of students, at ages from 18 to 80.

I took several classes with Giles on contemporary poetry and got to know him personally as a result of this. He is very knowledgeable about English literature and about the English language. He has a very open, involving teaching style, preferring to engage students rather than lecture at them. He's very approachable, has a great sense of humour, and is fun to work with. he has teenage children so is familiar with the demands of GCSE and A level, and he has also supervised post-grads. I think he would be an excellent tutor.

Giles is an inspiring tutor with a profound knowledge of his subject and a confidence-giving teaching style where he shares his love of the subject as if you and he were learning together. He is also an excellent poet himself.

Phil from Oxford, he has a masterful knowledge of the English language, its history, and its proper usage. I wish I lived closer to him so that I could send my child to work and study with Giles.

Giles prepares his tutorials very carefully and is brilliant at researching interesting and stimulating materials to engage tutees. He is very caring, ensuring that tutorials progress at just the right pace for success. He is very encouraging and a very constructive marker of assignments. He is also rigorous in keeping sight of goals to be achieved by tutees, all with a sense of fun and with humour never far away. Discussions in Giles' tutorials are at a level of knowledge and freedom I have very rarely encountered elsewhere. Why do I recommend Giles? Because I feel I have enjoyed learning from him and that I can always trust him. I am still learning from his courses and I think I always will. I hope you enjoy the same experience!

He is an authoritative and imaginative tutor, always well-prepared for his sessions and relaxed and friendly in class. He is happy to learn from his students' experience and is comfortable and flexible with open group discussions about poetry, English literature, the arts in general, and cultural history. Giles is an excellent tutor who is extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of English. I know Giles as a poetry tutor (both literature and creative writing at Oxford University Department for Continuous Education) and found him very encouraging as well as academically rigorous. You will be unlikely to find a tutor in English Literature or English Language more passionate, or more knowledgeable, or more experienced, or more accomplished than Giles. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Giles Goodland is one of the best poets now writing in English, a scholar who long worked for the OED, a critic of renown, an erudite and highly intelligent person with high moral standards and an affable personalty. Giles is an experienced handler of the English language, and I have known him for a good many years (at least a decade).For over 30 years he has worked as a senior editor on the Oxford English Dictionary (in other words a member of the OED’s University staff). He is competent, reliable and knowledgeable of his literature; indeed he is also a talented, published poet in his own right , with many titles to his credit, while even now continuing to add to this list of his authored books of poetry .
He is both personable and conscientious and a parent whose family were near neighbours here in Ealing, engaging with many local community activities such as Scout’s family weekends under canvas.
