My approach to teaching is based on emphasising two key elements of instructing for college courses. The first one is to make the courses simple and clear enough that everybody in class would understand the majority of the course load regardless of their educational background. Depending on the course’s objectives, in order to make the course clear enough, I use the media and technology vastly. For example, for a Project Evaluation or Spreadsheet Modelling courses, students are needed to learn and apply M.S. Excel programme. Accordingly, I intend to make computer-hours (on the top of the lecture hours in the class), to make sure that they understand independently the use of the M.S. Excel programme to solve the finance/economics exercises. Another tool I have been using is adapting the courses to real life as much as possible. Giving examples from the life and in particular from simple newspapers help students utilise the economic theories into the real-life. The second element is to give the idea to the students that they will not be successful unless they work hard enough; this makes them complete the requirements of the course. I evaluate my class early to find out whether students begin to lose the main picture of the course or not. Middle of the semester is too late to realise that you have lost half of your class. By giving quizzes, assignments or homework, I try to get a feel for my students early so that I can shape my class to their abilities and needs. More importantly, I want to make sure students are able to use these theories/analytical tools, into the real life. More important tool would be having a project for the course, which helps students both understand and use the theories/analytical tools, adequately. Secondly, I want to make sure they are able to express themselves. Accordingly I encourage them to present their project on the class, which would be a good practice for them before graduating. Keeping different motivation for different classes in mind, I intend to use these objectives above. However, given that I partially teach to distance students, some of my methods are inapplicable. But, teaching to distance students helped me to improve course materials. I eventually have the habit to prepare all my lecture notes/PowerPoint slides typed, upload them to the course web-site, and discuss more examples (apart from the ones discussed in the class hours). Also, I also return back to students e-mails, phone calls as soon as possible (during 6 hours under normal circumstances).

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been teaching and tutoring for economics, finance, and statistics courses for more than 20 years. I started to develop an interest in tutoring when I was studying at the university. While I was doing my PhD, I have been requested private tutoring from students as they were satisfied with the tutorial sessions for the economics courses I have done.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I, myself an economics professor, currently is an active researcher as well. I have been published more than 100 articles in the economics and finance fields. Besides, I have been teaching at different universities/ colleges more than 25 different courses in finance, accounting and economics and statistics fields, which made me grate expert in these fields.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In fact, the top researchers in economics such as Daron Acemoglu, inspired me a lot.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First, a good tutor needs the relevant degrees, and their grades should be outstanding enough. If a tutor excelled the course during his/her studies, he/she should be able to teach it as well. The second important criteria is of course, the communication skills. A good tutor should have good communication skills and able to transmit the knowledge to the student successfully.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There is nothing such a free lunch. This us the first principle we teach in the economics courses. In order to get something, you need to give up. You can not learn any subject without an effort. You need to sacrifice your leisure time (give up) so that you will excel the subject.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Well, it depends on the university and lecturer I suppose. While I was studying, the education system was based on teaching theories most of the time, while I was having trouble to reconcile the theories with real life. This is the main problem of economics courses I suppose. Nowadays, I feel that lecturers find ways to convert the economics discipline to more applied.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In general, I have a passion to learn new techniques in Math or Math related courses. I like both learning and teaching math related courses.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I think one and most of the distinctive skills I have is that I am able to teach/tutor a variety of courses in different disciplines like finance, accounting, economics and statistics.
