About Irina

I have been giving Russian lessons for about 7 years. I have tutored a student, who didn't know any Russian and wanted to prepare for taking Russian as her major subject at Cambridge. I taught her the basics of the language, by the end of the 3-months course with me, she was able to communicate on a range of topics, read, type and understand spoken language. She also enjoyed singing Russian songs. I am currently preparing a school-boy for a GCSE exam in Russian, and he is making a lot of progress. I am also tutoring an elderly woman, who is learning Russian as a hobby. From having a very basic knowledge of Russian she has reached a level, where she communicates fluently with native speakers, understands and expresses her opinion on the classical works of Russian literature. - What kind of experience do you have? I taught general and business English at the Interpreted Faculty of the Kazakh State University of International Relations and World Languages for 6 years. Then I worked at the language school "English First" for a year. I also taught privately for over 10 years. My students ranged from 8-year old children, 15-19 year old University students to 30-40 year old adults. Their level, needs and requirements also varied from beginners to upper-intermediate and learning English for Business communication. I taught Russian as a native language at primary school when I studied at the Pedagogical College. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes, I do. - Tell me about some of your current students. In April 2010 I had a Business English student who wanted to improve his essay writing skills and learn more about business through and intensive one week course. It was a nice challenge for me. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it. He is really enthusiastic, very observant, has a good business acumen and original critical thinking. At the moment I have a very good Russian student. She is an absolute beginner, but she did a good preparatory work - learnt the alphabet, learnt to read, listened to some dialogues and songs and learnt a bit about grammar. This preparation made a big difference: speaking, listening comprehension and grammar come easy to her and we've had meaningful communication from the first lesson.

I think that learning a language is a process of plunging into its culture, so I teach using interesting stories and videos, pictures and creative tasks. I often use role plays and different language games. I try to provide a lot of opportunities for the students to express themselves and practise the new language. I play the guitar and sing a lot of Russian songs. If the student is interested, songs are incorporated in the programme. Learning is a creative process, and both teacher and student play an equal part in it. It's possible to achieve a good result only if both parties are passionate, dedicated and prepared to work hard. It's important to practise the language you've learnt in all sorts of situations and ways. The teacher is responsible for providing the opportunity to see how the language is used through reading and listening tasks and use it in speaking and writing, but the student is responsible for using the opportunity. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach English as a Foreign Language and Russian. - Tell me about your qualifications. First I graduated from the Pedagogical college in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This gave me a headstart in teaching methodology. Then I specialised in English and got a diploma of an English teacher at the Kazakh State University of International Relations and World Languages. I continued my education in England and got a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and Certificate in Teaching Business English to Speakers of Other Languages. - How much do you charge? When I teach at my own home my charges are £14 per hour. The first lesson is a consultation and evaluation, and it's free. If I have to travel to a student's home, the charges are £18 per hour. I'm happy to give group discounts depending on the size of the group. - Where do you teach? I teach at home and at students' homes. I live in the West Midlands, the surrounding areas include Kenilworth, Bedworth, Baginton, Bulkington, Dunchurch, Corley, Meriden, Wolston. I'm willing to travel around Coventry. - When are you available? I'm available on weekdays during the day and in the evenings (except for Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. and Friday evening from 7 p.m.) Arrangements can be made for weekends. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I teach school-age children and adults. Levels for both English and Russian include Beginner to Upper-Intermediate. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. I have broadband and Skype.
