About Robbie

I am a graduate of the University of Nottingham with a PGCE (Postgrad Certificate of Education) from Aberystwyth, I taught for 3 years as subject-lead for Spanish in a secondary school in Buckinghamshire, and now I tutor from my sailboat in Central America!

By the end of my second year as the sole Spanish teacher in the Buckinghamshire school, the subject with most improved grades compared to pre-covid levels was Spanish. I also taught KS3 French during my time here. I accumulated a wealth of resources, activities, games and techniques over my last 3 years of professional teaching which make my lessons engaging, effective and enjoyable.

Earlier in life, for my year abroad from University I studied in Valencia & Salamanca and worked in Honduras. After graduating I bought a cheap sailing boat in Guatemala and sailed it up to Mexico. I sold it and lived for 6 months in Puerto Rico. I later worked on a boat based in Barcelona which took me around the Balearic and Canary Islands.

During the Covid years I came home and began professionally teaching as subject-lead for Spanish in a Bucks secondary school. I now use my teaching skills to keep me afloat as I (literally) navigate the waters of the Hispanic world.

I am patient and thoughtful of my students' needs and abilities and differentiate accordingly. I completed masses of regular Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses in education. I was a form tutor, and it was the compassionate element of the pastoral side to the job that I think I valued the most.

I love cooking the meals I picked up along my travels, especially Mexican tacos, Guatemalan tapado and Spanish tortilla, fabada and paella! I also love Spanish film, TV, literature and music, and incorporate them all into my lessons.

I channel my experience, passion and cultural knowledge acquired from a decade travelling, sailing and living in the Hispanic world into my lessons. I believe in making language-learning useful from the very first lesson, and love to focus my lessons around stories (teaching from a sailboat gives me no shortage of these!), music and topics of conversation that interest the individual learner.

I have an in-depth knowledge of the AQA and Edexcel specifications, and a precise understanding of how to target instruction for achieving the top levels in these.

I tailor my 60 min lessons to each students individual needs using entertaining methods of learning, and stay abreast of new and existing pedagogy to ensure that each lesson works towards taking each student above and beyond their targets.

I learned Spanish by living in, and sailing around Spain, the Canaries, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

I teach to children or adults, and from any level from beginners to University level.
