About Zuri

Teaching saxophone requires a blend of structured technique and creative exploration, and my teaching philosophy reflects this balance. I begin with essential fundamentals such as breath control, embouchure setup, posture, finger agility, and timing to establish a healthy, efficient playing foundation. Tone quality is a constant focus; I guide students in articulation, phrasing, vibrato, and dynamics to develop a personal sound that communicates emotion and style. Music theory and ear training are integrated through repertoire and improvisation to support comprehensive musicianship. Improvisation is a cornerstone of my lessons, introduced early with simple exercises that gradually increase in complexity, helping students build confidence and spontaneity. I customize lessons based on individual goals and musical tastes, whether students are drawn to jazz, blues, pop, or classical repertoire. Technology plays an important role; I use recording devices, slow-downer apps, and backing tracks to aid practice and creative exploration. A highlight of my teaching career was assisting a student struggling with intonation and phrasing to achieve confident solo performances in their school jazz band. My goal is to create an engaging, supportive space where students develop technique, express creativity, and cultivate a lifelong passion for the saxophone.

About the lesson

As a saxophone instructor, my mission is to blend technical precision with creative freedom, nurturing students into confident, expressive musicians. I begin with fundamentals like breath control, embouchure formation, articulation, finger technique, and tone quality, creating a healthy and adaptable playing foundation.

From the outset, I introduce music theory, ear training, and jazz harmony to build musical literacy and prepare students for improvisation and group playing. I customize lessons based on individual interests, whether that means delving into Charlie Parker’s bebop language, exploring soulful blues phrasing, or crafting contemporary pop covers by ear.

Improvisation is central to my pedagogy, broken down into manageable steps such as scale choices, melodic ideas, rhythmic patterns, and expressive phrasing to cultivate originality and confidence. I incorporate engaging tools like play-along tracks, improvisation exercises, and call-and-response to develop listening skills and musical interaction. Technology enhances practice with recording apps, slow-downer software, and loopers, helping students analyze progress and experiment creatively.

I focus on performance readiness by teaching stage presence, managing performance nerves, and connecting emotionally with audiences. A highlight of my teaching was mentoring a student who initially relied heavily on notation but, through personalized ear-based methods, became a passionate soloist and ensemble leader. I strive to foster an environment where students feel inspired, challenged, and free to express their musical identities fully.
