About Serban

Hi, my name's Serban (Seb), I'm a professional drummer/percussionist with 22 years' experience performing live in rock and symphonic orchestras across Europe. My qualifications, teaching experience, passion and long-standing dedication to drumming, started at 12 years of age, and I started my musicianship at 6, learning the piano. I am a friendly and professional music teacher who loves helping my students experience the joy of music. Whether you're already a competent player or an absolute beginner, technique and musicianship will be at the forefront of your lessons with me. My aim is to transmit my passion and love for music to you, and help you develop, and have a great time doing so. My students are always encouraged to perform their pieces in such a way that even the most basic are a pleasure to listen to. My focus is to give you the tools to play whatever music you desire, according to the professional standards of the given genre, as well as to arm you with the ability to develop yourself and discover your own artistic expression.

I firmly believe in the importance of music lessons being enjoyable and rewarding, so I encourage the students to learn to play the songs and music they love. It is also important to me that they learn a bit about music theory, how to read music, and how to play the instrument with a good technique. Whether you're already a competent player or an absolute beginner, technique and musicianship will be at the forefront of your lessons should you choose me as your teacher.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I developed my passion for music at an early age, when rhythm and sound fascinated me more than anything else. Very soon, I discovered the instrument that truly resonated with me: the drums. Their power, energy, and ability to drive the music forward instantly captured my heart. From the very first time I picked up the drumsticks, I felt a deep connection—I knew this was the instrument through which I could best express myself. Over the years, my passion only grew stronger, transforming into a lifelong journey of learning, performing, and teaching. Today, I’m dedicated to sharing that same excitement and joy with others who are starting their own journey behind the drum kit.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Yes! I often find myself listening to rock, funk, jazz fusion, or a favorite drummer like Benny Greb, on repeat without ever getting tired of it. There’s something about the groove, the energy, and the creativity in that music that keeps me inspired every time I hear it. Even if I’ve heard the same track dozens of times, I always discover a new detail in the rhythm or arrangement that makes me appreciate it even more.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

One of the most challenging and riveting courses I could give to a student would be about developing true musical expression through rhythm. It goes far beyond just learning patterns or sticking exercises—it’s about connecting technique, timing, dynamics, and creativity until the drums become an extension of your own voice. In such a course, I would push students to explore advanced grooves, odd time signatures, improvisation, and even how to interact with other instruments in a band. It’s demanding, because it requires discipline, patience, and an open mind, but it’s also incredibly rewarding: the student not only becomes a better drummer, but also a real musician who can tell stories through rhythm.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument has its challenges, but if I had to choose the most complicated one to master, I’d probably say the violin. Unlike many instruments, the violin doesn’t have frets or keys to guide you—so developing perfect intonation takes years of focused practice. On top of that, players must coordinate the bow, the fingers, posture, and expression all at once. It’s an instrument that demands patience, discipline, and incredible sensitivity. Of course, drums have their own unique challenges too: mastering rhythm, independence, and consistency is no easy task! But the violin, in my opinion, stands out as one of the most technically and emotionally demanding instruments to truly master.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

For me, the keys to success are passion, discipline, and consistency. Passion is what fuels your journey—it keeps you curious and excited to learn. Discipline is what helps you practice even on the days when motivation is low. And consistency is what transforms small daily efforts into real progress over time. I also believe in keeping an open mind: listening to different styles of music, learning from other musicians, and never stopping the search for new inspiration. Success in music isn’t about perfection—it’s about growth, expression, and the joy of sharing your sound with others.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

If I could sit in my favorite bar in the early hours of the morning and meet three musicians, I’d choose John Bonham, Steve Gadd, and Dave Grohl. Bonham, because his power and creativity shaped the way rock drumming is understood—even a short conversation with him would be like stepping into the history of rhythm itself. Gadd, because his subtlety, groove, and musical wisdom are second to none; I’d love to hear how he approaches creating such timeless drum parts. And Grohl, because of his energy, passion, and ability to connect with audiences everywhere—he’s not just a drummer but also a true rock icon who shows how rhythm can evolve into full musical expression. Sharing stories and insights with those three would be the most inspiring night imaginable.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I was in music school, I remember one practice room that was always booked by the best drummers. One day, I arrived early and managed to get in before anyone else. I started practicing a simple groove, but I was nervous because I knew other students were listening outside the door. Instead of stopping, I kept going—and little by little, I relaxed and got lost in the rhythm. When I stepped out, one of the older students said, ‘That sounded tight—keep at it.’ It was a small moment, but it taught me something huge: confidence doesn’t come from being perfect, it comes from showing up, practicing, and letting the music speak for you.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

What makes me a Superprof in music isn’t just technical knowledge—it’s the little touches that make learning engaging and meaningful. I focus on connecting with each student individually, understanding their goals, and adapting lessons to their pace and style. I use real-world examples, practical exercises, and even storytelling to make concepts memorable. I celebrate small victories, encourage creativity, and show students how music can be both disciplined and fun. It’s those personal touches—the care, enthusiasm, and attention to detail—that help students not just play music, but truly love it.
