About Sophia

Hello everyone! My name is Sophia, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I am a recent BSc Psychology Alumnus from McGill University, and a poetry, art, and travel enthusiast. Currently, I spend my days working as a research assistant for two psychology graduate students at McGill, interning at the Montreal Fluency Centre, co-hosting and running monthly open-mic poetry nights, working at the McGill Peer Support Centre, and exploring the city of Montreal during these warm summer days.

I am a Native-English speaker in Canada, and have studied in both English and in French throughout my years of schooling. I have a love for the English language, and a passion for its literature. I often spend my rainy days in getting cozy with a cup of tea and a good English book! I have much experience in writing, speaking, and reading comprehension in English. My accent is that of Canadian English. My love for languages and the beauty of connecting with the world through language has also driven me to learn an intermediate level of Italian in University as well as some basic German. I also grew up learning Bulgarian at home, and now speak the language primarily with my grandmother. All of this is to say that I have quite a bit of experience in learning new languages, and have developed some tips and tricks along the way that will be helpful to you in learning and improving your own English!

My enthusiasm for tutoring began in 2019, when I worked as an Alumnus tutor at Marianopolis College and tutored fellow students in Calculus and Linear Algebra. In 2020, I began tutoring English, French, Calculus and Linear Algebra at Superprof. My most recent tutoring experience is at my clinical internship at the Montreal Fluency Centre, where I work one-on-one with high school students to help them develop independent learning strategies. That is, I teach students how to learn school topics, focused around techniques that are personally most adaptive to them. As your own personal tutor, I will work with you to uncover and develop your own personal learning strategies most adaptive to how you learn the English language.

I would love to support learners of English as they get acquainted with the language and develop proficiency. As I have been a student myself for 18 years of my life, I definitely know how challenging school can be. I understand the frustrations with learning a new language -- I've been there myself! Throughout my time studying English, I've developed some tips to help make that learning experience a smoother ride. And that is why I love tutoring: because I want to share those tips with you too! About the lesson

Hi everybody! If you are here reading this, thank you for taking an interest in learning English with me! I'm happy you're here, and I'd love the opportunity to guide you through your learning as we work together to help you establish your best fluency in the English language.

From my own personal experience learning languages, I definitely know how challenging it can be to learn a new language. I make it my priority to tailor the lesson to the learner's goals, learning styles, and needs. I focus on working together with the learner, so that they are also free to guide the tutoring lessons based on what they feel they need the most help with. Therefore, my classes are flexible and based on the student's needs. The level of instruction is intended for anyone who wants to learn and improve their English!

Some examples of what a session might look like include:
*the learner is welcome to suggest other styles of tutoring sessions as well, based on their individual goals. please contact me so we can discuss it!

*SPOKEN ENGLISH*: Sophia and the learner may engage in casual conversation so that the learner gets the opportunity to practice hearing and understanding English, as well as the chance to practice their own spoken English. Sophia will provide feedback on pronunciation and vocabulary. For group sessions, the learners may all engage in conversation while Sophia listens and provides feedback .
*READING COMPREHENSION*: Sophia may provide texts for the learner to read with the tutor during the session. Questions may be reflected upon and answered in order to practice comprehending English texts. The learner may also suggest their own text.
*WRITTEN ENGLISH*: Sophia may provide writing prompts for topics in English, and the learner may practice engaging in writing skills. Sophia will review the text and provide feedback.

Free cancelation if I am notified at least 24 hrs before the scheduled meeting time, so that the opened spot can go to another client. If I am not notified within 24hrs, there is a charge of the session at 50%.

I can teach in groups as well! For every additional person added to the group during a session, there is a $2 discount per person per hour. For example, for a group of 2 people, I charge $18/hr for each person, for a total of $36 for the hour.
