About Alberto

I am a passionate History, Sociology and Philosophy teacher (both ancient and modern). Fluent in Italian, Spanish and English I have taught in Madrid, Barcelona, North Italy and London. I can also teach Politics. Outside of the classroom, I have written and directed school plays, organised the school journals and the Olympic games of philosophy. My students
I have been teaching for more than 15 years. My classes have varied from 1-2 up to 32 (with up to 300 students per year). My students are of differing ages and stages of proficiency, so I have plenty of experience teaching at all levels. I consider myself a friendly and patient teacher, concerned above all else with the all-round development of my students' capacity for comprehensive thought. I have a strong belief in the unification of knowledge and am always striving to incorporate seemingly disparate branches of learning into a broader horizon in order to provide my students with a sufficiently complete picture. Availability The length and frequency of sessions can be determined by the student's requirements and availability. The first lesson For any given first session I like to get to know the student, find out where they're at in their course of study, and see what their current working methods are like. Usually, talking about the current piece of homework, the next upcoming exam, or due assignment is a great way to gauge their requirements, assess where my help is most needed, and thus collaboratively devise a joint programme of work.

My teaching method
I bring a broad-based interdisciplinary knowledge to a range of subjects. This allows the opportunity to consider new ideas and to place different perspectives in conversation with each other, which is an instrumental skill for improving academic writing. A lesson with me will be interactive and lucid. I am adaptable as all students are different, so I will constantly monitor and remain attentive to our learning objectives.

My teaching methods vary, but as a rule I start with an in-depth account of the subject, taking care to ground it contextually, and then proceed to a discussion of the main points. Whether the lessons take more of a dialogical form or the more typical lecture type format depends on the needs and preferences of the student. The lessons will be focused on studying techniques, written exercises with supervision and recalling techniques. We will work not just to close any gaps but also help the student in learning how to optimise private study. For students who need to get up to speed with content, I can offer sessions where I present you with ideas and new ways of understanding the topic. I approach each topic according to the immediate and long-range needs of the student, whether they require help in comprehending their topic, in preparing for exams, or in planning, executing, and proofing written work. Depending on the desire and temperament of the student, I can gear my lessons either towards cramming and exam survival or towards the nurturing of lifelong learning. My general policy is also to be flexible with what the student needs of me. For example, my payment is for the hour, however I am happy to look over work and send comments. My fee is not just one hour as I work with the student in all aspects of their learning via e-mails outside the lessons. Pushing forward If you're enthralled by your subject and wish to pursue it further, beyond the bounds of learning outcomes and assessment, then I can cultivate that passion in you. If you want to improve your critical or creative writing, I can help you articulate your vision and present it according to high standards; along the way I will instil good practices that will help you in any such task. Success rate I have assisted a considerable number of students over this period, all of which have attained success in their various endeavours. Most importantly, I am kind, helpful and patient with all my students, and I believe in them all. Working on the exam
I can offer essay-workshop sessions based on my experience writing and marking high-scoring essays.

For those more concerned with exam revision, I have unique methods and templates to share to help cram all the information for those tricky tests! Homework

I do give my students homework (within reason, I know how busy term-time can be!) so that I can track their progress.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in the humanities field developed at a young age, as I was always fascinated by history, literature, and the arts. This passion led me to pursue higher education in humanities-related subjects, and during that time, I discovered my love for teaching. I found joy in sharing knowledge and helping others understand complex concepts. Private tutoring, on the other hand, came naturally as I progressed in my teaching career. I realized that some students needed more personalized attention and guidance to excel, which motivated me to engage in private tutoring to cater to their individual needs.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As a humanities teacher, I cover a broad range of subjects, including history, literature, art, philosophy, and cultural studies. I particularly enjoy discussing historical events and their impact on societies, analyzing literary masterpieces and their underlying themes, exploring various art movements and their significance, and engaging in philosophical debates with my students. While I do appreciate all aspects of the humanities, some topics, such as complex philosophical theories or dense academic writing, can be more challenging to convey in an accessible manner.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of encountering several inspiring teachers who have influenced my approach to education. One particular role model was a history professor during my university years. His passion for the subject was contagious, and his ability to make historical events come alive in the classroom left a lasting impression on me. He taught me the importance of creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment to foster a love for the subject among students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, several qualities are essential. Patience is crucial, as each student learns at their own pace and may face different challenges. Being adaptable and resourceful helps in tailoring teaching methods to suit individual learning styles. Effective communication skills allow me to convey complex ideas clearly and encourage active student participation. Empathy helps me understand my students' struggles and fears, making me better equipped to support and motivate them. Lastly, a passion for the subject and genuine enthusiasm for teaching fosters a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One memorable anecdote from my days at school involved teaching a group of elementary students about ancient civilizations. To make the lesson more interactive, I organized a "time travel" activity where each student was assigned a historical figure to portray. They had to research their character, dress up in costume, and present themselves as if they were from that time period. The students not only learned about history but also developed confidence and creativity in the process. It was heartwarming to witness their excitement and see how much they had absorbed from the experience.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The humanities can be a challenging subject to teach because it involves interpreting and analyzing abstract concepts and historical events that might not have a straightforward answer. Helping students develop critical thinking skills and encouraging them to think beyond the surface can be a constant challenge. Additionally, there may be students who initially struggle to connect with the subject, as it might not align with their immediate interests. In such cases, finding innovative ways to engage and ignite their curiosity can be demanding but ultimately rewarding.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching, without a doubt, is my greatest passion. I find immense fulfillment in witnessing the growth and progress of my students as they develop a deeper understanding of the humanities and its significance in shaping our world. However, aside from teaching, I also have a profound love for art, especially painting. It serves as a creative outlet and complements my teaching style, allowing me to incorporate visual aids and artistic elements into my lessons.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

As a Superprof, besides my years of experience and multilingual abilities, my dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment sets me apart. I strive to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their thoughts freely. Additionally, my passion for the humanities and continuous pursuit of knowledge enables me to stay updated with the latest developments in the field and offer students the most enriching educational experience possible.
