About Danny

Hello! My name is Danny - I'm a singer, teacher, director, conductor, stage manager, and arts administrator with 15 years' experience in the classical music sector. I know it's a lot of text here, so let me give you a little Table of Contents: if you're interested in my credits, feel free to read the first three paragraphs below; if you're interested in the heart of me as a teacher and person, go straight to the last few paragraphs! Both approaches are welcome :) I hold a Bachelors degree in Voice Performance with Teaching Certification and a minor in Design and Production with a Stage Management concentration from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, a Masters of Music in Voice and Opera Studies from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music in New York, and am currently pursuing my PhD in Music Research at the University of Glasgow. I've conducted, directed, and managed a great many performances in Detroit and New York especially, performed around the world, served on the Voice and Opera faculty at SUNY Purchase Conservatory for five years, and served for several years as Managing Director of Opera Modo, a non-profit opera company based in Detroit. I've been fortunate to study with some spectacular artists from the last generation of singers and coaches, including Marilyn Horne, George Shirley, Jacque Trussel, Nicole Cabell, Mira Zakai, Thomas Hampson, Enza Ferrari, and Håkan Hagegård. I've performed in many places throughout the world - New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Sydney, Wellington, Urbania and Teatro Bramante, to name a few. I've worked on a *staggering* variety of projects - everything from singing on Grammy Award-winning albums, to resurrecting five-hour long operatic epics that had never been performed before in their entirety, to premiering a work playing an old lighthouse keeper and his ghost bride...at the same time, to busking the streets of a Fringe Festival dressed in Civil War kit with a band playing the tuba and accordion, to putting together a Don Giovanni conceptualised as the Rocky Horror Picture Show, to mounting a production of Turn of the Screw in an actively haunted bar in an old logging mogul's mansion...I could go on! All of it done with incredible people, some with companies, others with choirs and ensembles, some on my own. Now that we've gotten through all the expected peacocking, let me tell you what REALLY matters!! Teaching is something innate in me - I've always had a love for co-creating with others, and teaching has been a wonderful outlet for that passion. I've worked in many positions and levels over the years, from young kids in primary school to pre-professionals at universities and professionals in larger companies. All of it has been a joy, but I've particularly enjoyed my time with teenagers in secondary school, university students, and pre-professionals; there's something very special about that time in an artist's life when they're trying on different skins, seeing they are not only as a person but as a performer. I find the best way of training someone (if not always the easiest) is to do what my dear friend and first directing mentor, Kay, always called "working from the heart centre - OUT!" To become the best *insert-your-dream-title-here* that you can be, we have to start with *you* as a person. Who you are is the best roadmap to becoming who you wish to be, and that's the path I find most effective to walk when teaching anyone how to do ANYTHING in the arts. If we aren't working from within ourselves and honouring ourselves as we do it, we're creating something false that won't be sustainable. That may feel a little abstract and intangible because, in many ways, it is - this is something that we find together, and it's a beautiful, convicting, revelatory, and supremely rewarding process of which I always feel incredibly fortunate to be involved. Should you choose to work with me, I will be so happy to help you become the best you can be in any field I can - let's see where we can go together!

Lessons with me are really determined by you! What is it you need help with? The following are some of the things we could work on together: - Singing technique - Stage deportment and techniques - Acting for the stage - Conducting for choirs and orchestras - Directing techniques for stage directors - Teaching techniques for voice teachers and choir directors - Audition strategies and coaching My teaching style is always tailored to the individual, but you can expect a light and inviting atmosphere, a fluid, conversational pace to our work, and an ebb and flow of serious work balanced with a hefty dose of joy! The best way to figure out if teacher and student are a good match for each other is to actually work together, so let's spend a free lesson together seeing how we get on! Usually, lessons go for an hour, but that can be flexible depending on the student and what we're working on. Thanks for your interest and I look forward to speaking with you soon!
